Gesneriads

Hello everyone:

I'm preparing for spring and i just need to know if you can propagate alsobia 'cygnet' by leaf cuttings. I only have a small plant and am interested in increasing my collection of gesneriads and would like to propagate what I have to trade with all of you. Also, are sinningias propagatable (is that a word?) by leaf cuttings? please let me know! thanks ":D

hi and welcome!

Alsobia is best propagated by rooting stolons - little clusters of leaves. I haven't tried propping them from leaf, but those types generally do better from stolons anyway. You see little clumps of leaves along the stem? That's a stolon. You want to keep a little stem attached to it, and then just root it in some mix.

Some sinningias will propagate from leaf, but some will not (they don't root, or they do root but won't form a tuber). Pretty much all can be propped from tip cuttings.

the best way to propagate sinningia is to take a top cutting.they will almost always take.just keep them covered for about a week or 2

Keyring, thanks for the advise. For some reason all the stolons that this particular plant sent off have died since they grew last summer. I don't know what happened but that's not an option at this point. I will keep it in mind for later, though.

How do you mean tip/top cutting? like a regular veg. prop. cut? or like a crown cutting like with african violets?

thanks
scott

yes, just cut the top off, at least 4 leaves & stick it in the soil. I have a large selection of them & always do it that way.

I am receiving one from a friend. She is quite good with all members of this family and this is what she wrote to me in an email:
A stolon will grow out of the Mom Espica and Alsobia Cygnet plants like they do on spider plants. I cut them off. Fill pot top up with soil-less mix. Put the stolon into soil in middle of pot all the wat down until smacke touching the soil. Water threw good put under light keep moist within a week it will have rooted and growing into a new plant ! I made a thread Espicias are fun to grow and share. I took a Mom plant sith stolons and showed how I cut the three off of Mom planted them in their own pots and then Mom went into a 5 inch pan pot. I then had Mom and three baby plants. I did it in step by step pictures.
