caster beans from cuttings?

Casa Grande, AZ(Zone 9b)

Does anyone know how to root castor beans from cuttings?
I would also know how to do Brugmansia if anyone knows? Im pretty much a novice at rooting anything from cuttings. Thanks in advance

I can't speak about the castor beans, but as far as Brugmansias, just take a cutting and root it in water. They root very fast.

Never tried castor beans from cutting as there soooooo quick from seed and the seed is easy to sow and get etc.

Mike, since you are in this thread I need to ask a question about the castor beans..
I soaked them last night and am going to plant them today... indoors, I plan on using them in pots as mobile shade trees.. should I plant the seeds in small containers or just go and plant them in the large pots they will utlimitly end up in... ?2 seeds per pot?

I never bother soaking them they seem to sprout without that.
I tried some in pots last year but they grew all stragely. 2 or 3 per pot should be ok though. Start in 9cm / 3inch pots and then keep potting them up. You are gona need some huge pots though. Mine out grew a 1 1/2 foot across pot last year so planted them out side in the end.

But hey your a whole new climate so anything could happen.

I should clarify... they will not be staying indoors...
I do have a few "tree" pots, from when I have purchased trees over the years... never know when I might need them and also they make great "trash" bins when I'm working in a garden.
And worse case scenero... I will plop them in the ground if need be... by that time I should know where I need them.

Thanks for being so quick in your answer.

I guess you meant outside. I just start mine inside.
Sounds like a good idea, you are right try it and if there too big plant them, or just plant the pot into the soil a bitand the small roots will find there way into the ground. I wouldn't advise it normally but these are only annuals.

Have fun

Fran,

I have grown Castor Beans in my gardens for several years and love them. I always start them from seed - they germinate very easily.

Castor Beans, especially the green variety, get HUGE in a very short time. Mine always get at least 15 feet tall, and the tallest have been over 18 feet. And that's in just five months! I just can't see growing such big plants in pots, but perhaps it would work if the pots were large enough.

Good luck to you.

Mine don't get quite that big but they got nearly 10 foot this year. Thats the biggest i'm likely to get. We don't have a long enough season.

What a big un Erik. hehe
