I love my pond!

Adding a pond to our landsape was by far the best value for our money. We have life year 'round. And when winters get so long (like right now) the pond can be a real lifesaver! Does anyone know if I can purchase a frog that will stay in my pond or can I throw any tadpole in there? I had a large one that stayed with us three years and he died last year, he really added character and I miss him!

Beautiful, love all the flowers! I don't know about a frog that will stay, I would say leopard frogs are out for you simply because your pond isn't enclosed and they will travel very far to find food. Where did you get your other frog? Can't you get a new one the same way?

Beautiful pond, Brenb! It looks like you are in a rural area. Can't believe you don't have frogs just moving in on their own. Seems frogs show up anytime a puddle lasts more than a day around here! LOL!

Gorgeous, brenb, I just love the lushness of the flowers and plants with the water. It looks so inviting and what nature is all about - Healthy for mind and body. Per frogs/toads, they just show up around here too, in Iowa. I bought a couple of toad tadpoles the first year and last year had 3 mating pairs in the spring. During the rest of the season, they would disappear and then reappear - don't know where they went in between. I lost 4 in the skimmer, but since there were so many tadpoles, I don't think all were gone. I didn't see any in August/September, but in October when I covered the pond with netting, I saw four in the pond again. Anyway, you may be surprised when spring comes - Dax

I'm in PA and even though I have put in tadpoles, when ever I have cleaned the pond and fished out the wildlife, it always seems that I find more frogs than I raised. Look for frog eggs this spring in the quieter water areas.
Your pond is beautiful! You should be so proud of it. It also gave me idea for mine. My preformed liner is crushing on one side with the larger rocks from my waterfall. This spring will bring renovation and enlargement of the pond at my house. I am moving on to a flexible liner so I can have more artistic license in the design. I hope it looks as great as yours when I am done.

I am in no way any expert, but have heard that if you get a bull frog tadpole, when grown he will stay there. I don't know if that is true or not - and I am sure it would depend on the food the pond brings in for the frog too. It is obvious with your flowers, there will be plenty of bees and butterflies around for the frogs to eat. We haven't ever put frogs in our pond but have sat in the window at times and counted a dozen sitting on lily pads and lotus pads waiting on their next meal. Our pond is close to our house too, so they will come regardless. However, you can get 1 water snake too, and he will clean them all out in a couple of days before you ever knew he was there.

Edited to say - your pond is absolutely beautiful !

Thanks everyone for the great advice and compliments. Our old frog just moved in one day and since he was young, he got used to me and would let me hold him (only after fishing him out of the skimmer several times). We have a ton of toads. I guess I'll just have to be patient and maybe more frogs will come along. We have a small light post about 2 feet from the ground that makes a great feeding area for them. Hey, maybe there is a frog call I can learn :). Thanks again!

PS to ratherbdigging - If you have any questions on your pond, I would be glad to help. The number one tip I can give you with the loose liner is to dig a ledge for 2 - 5 gallon buckets on opposite sides of the pond and hide with stones. It gives the fish a place to hide from predators and it's also where they go when they hybernate in winter.
