Photos of Brug's in the Landscape

I asked this question in another thread, but didn't get any nibbles, so here it is in its own home:

Most of the pictures that I've seen of brug's are of the blooms up close. Well, I'm very interested in landscape design as a whole and would love to see how people have included them in their gardens and patios.

Please please please post your photos here, *or* point me to a thread that shows a selection of pictures on how brug's have been used in your landscapes.

Look at my sad and lonely garden. No brug's to be found here (yet)...

I love your curve. Glad you asked this question. I too need to see some pictures of them either planted or potted living in their garden home. My cuttings are well rooted now but I don't know the best spot to put them.

Thanks; that pic' was shot in late December, so it's somewhat misleading. It fills in pretty well with perennials, but it's only one year young and still has a long way to go. Some day the ugly driveway, trash bins, etc. will be hidden from view and the boxwood hedge will get some size to it... and brug's will be stratregically placed around the patio and beds. = )

Please post pictures when you put in your brugs. I'm wanting to plant mine around the beds under my sunroom windows. It faces west though and I'm afraid the brugs would fry. I also have three different colors of brugs. Do they look good planted and mixed close together? I've never seen brugs in bloom, first hand up close and personal.

They look wonderful in a group, ZZ !. I noticed you staggered the planting somewhat, is that right? Love the rock border too. Can't wait for Wrightie to see them.

Okay, this is what I'm talkin' bout. Thanks, ZZ! I'm a big fan of planting en masse. ZZ, would these be considered more of the "tree" as opposed to "shrub" form that I've been reading about?

I've been trying to get a better vision of their form, so this tells me that I can plant some more shade tolerant planties at the base of the brugmansias. Keep em coming, Kidz! I love it.

Here is a picture of my driveway that is turned into a container garden with a little bit of everything. I like coleus with the brugs as you can
see....LOL Also Elephant ears.

My yard is a jungle once the brugs. get large. I have them around the entire perimeter of my yard, in any spot that is large enough for one. Because I didn't have many blooms last summer, I didn't get any really good shots of what they normally look like planted out amongst my other plants. But here is a couple that should give you the idea. I have never been know for my garden design though.

ZZ I love your brug bed. What I would give for a half acre of land so I could just plant rows and rows of brugs. The brugs. in this picture weren't in bloom, but you can see all the large leaves plants, and those are all brugs.

I bet this thread is gonna get the Spring time bug into everyone!! LOL

That strip of ground is only 4' wide.. so they are closer to the fence than the carport.. I had 18 brugs in there and it was stuffed full.. Yes, I staggered a little. I had to chop em back quite a bit even before Fall. They get as wide as they do tall if not more.. It is hard to imagine... I can imagine them in your area Wrightie... It's gonna be perfect..
I had to get FULL SHADE plants cause there will be NO sun under them very soon. A lot of stuff last year didn't do anything cause it was in the shade. LOL I've got a couple dozen Cladiums, Hostas, impatiens, Brazillian Plume and begonias for underplanting this year... along with more Dwarf Mondo Grass in between the rocks in front.
I have some of the seedlings in pots out there and it will take me a month of moving and re arranging them before I plant. LOL I'll get a pic tomorrow. The best part is sitting there staring at them trying to decide who goes where.

I do not have many I just realized. I usually take up close ones. I found this one from 2003. This is of my courtyard, they are all in pots.

Kell, what size pot do you have the brug in the second picture? Kell, in your zone, brugs can live in the ground year round, is that correct?

Jerodsmom, I love your "jungle." When we bought our place 3 years ago there was nothing growing on the property but clay and oak trees. =) I'm trying to fill those beds in! With any luck, I'll have a jungle of my own this year.

Kell, those plant combinations in your pictures are spectacular! In the 2nd and 3rd shots, what are the red and blue blooms? LOVE what you're doing there! Makes me want to pour a glass of wine and pull up a chair ...

I'm sure we can all use a pick me up while we are waiting to get out and get our hands dirty and looking back at past gardens sure has me ready to get outside.

Sorry Cordeledawg and Wrightie, I didn't mean to be rude. I have been so busy I haven't been reading that many threads lately. And at night I have been chasing 2 new plant interests. I am a big flirt you know. I like all the plants, they just have to look at me and I fall in love. LOL


Well up to this year they could live in the ground here with minimal if any frost damage, Cordeledawg. But this year they got so fried. I do not have any signs of life on any of them. I could be so sad if I let myself. That big one the second picture is in a 25 gallon pot. If I think of it I will take its pic tomorrow. It is a lost cause. I was looking at it today. Sexy Lady is one dead lady. She was a beautiful standard. I have another young one that survived with no protection but it was up against the house. I will be moving into my courtyard.

Wrightie, the red blooms are a standard bougainvillea. It is my favorite bougie. I am trying to remember the name. It is a deep, deep pink. And the big blue one is in the ground. It usually is a bush but that one is so old it is now a tree. Of course I prune it carefully every year to keep it like that. I was afraid I had lost it too in our great freeze, but thankfully it is now leafing out. I use it for background color. It is a Solanum rantonettii.

GardenGuyKin and Cordeldawg. Hi, we live in the same zone, but drastically different climates I'm guessing. We are supposed to get about 23 inches of rain a year, but we have been far short of that for a long time. I have one brug in a pot and it's struggling. I'm trying to decide whether to put it in the ground or keep it in the pot. I don't know if it will make it through the winter in the ground, but it looks so sad in the pot. Does anybody here raised their brugs organically? Everything I've done in my yard has been organic, so I need to do this plant the same way.

The pictures ya'll posted here are so awsome, it seems a shame to keep this beautiful plant captive in a pot, just so it can go in the gh for the winter. Digging it up in the fall isn't a choice. What do you suggest?

I think organic is wonderful. They should do wonderful with some good manure.
Here where I live the problem overwintering in the ground is not the cold but all the rain during the winter. They die back to the ground
and most of the time they die due to root rot.
If I were you I would put it in the ground. They really like composted chicken manure!!!
Then before the first freeze cut off the trunk at ground level and root it indoors.

I hope some of this make some sense .. Iv'e been interrupted umpteen times by my new kitten. She's a real rascal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use composted turkey manure. Is that close enough? I didn't realize root rot was the problem. I thought it was just the cold. Root rot is not likely to be a problem here. Average rainfall for us 23 inches and we are in a droubt. Does it need to be watered over the winter, or is it better to let it be?

Cats and computers are a challenging combination sometimes. Ours are not kittens any more so they don't play like that, but we have one that use to like to sit on top of the monitor and dangle her tail in front of the screen. DH built a shelf system and the monitor fits inside it so there's no place for her to sit. Poor thing.:) Now they just sit in our lap and make biscuits while we try to type.

I don't really know about watering during the winter in your case. I would think you should water it from time to time. Maybe someone from your area will see this and give you some advise.
Turkey compost sounds excellent to me.

I used composted chicken manure recently, and I have to say it smells bad. More like a urine acid-like smell to me. I hope they like it. Do all brands of composted chicken manure smell that way? I thought the composted steer manure smelled better, but I try to do what the brugs like rather than what I like.
