Can it Be....

Prescott, AZ

Spring, she says ever so cautiously... The weather here has just warmed up beyond belief. I have been repotting, giving hair cuts, and De-Bugging all my hoya's like a mad women. Last week was in the 40's and we have been in the high 60's so far this week and close to 80 by the end of the week. I am so loving life. From all the weather forcast I have listened to, they are predicting a early hot spring for us here in Arizona. Guess I better get ready for fire season too.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Usually by this time in March we have begun to wram up a bit ourselves. We have a had some moderately warm days but this past week we had 2 nights of rather heavy frost. Our day temps for this week are to be quite warm with some days being close to 75 or higher and the nights are suppose to be average ranging form the mid 40's -high 50's.

A lot of our spring trees are already coming into bloom. I see azaleas all over the place that have open flowers on them. The japanese magnolias are open and the flowering pears are even starting to open now. Hyacinths and daffodils are blooming now too.

Tami, i'm doing the same thing as you. Some of my hoyas are getting new pots, some need haircuts and at least one needs to be freed from that family of mites that decided to call it home!

I also gotta check my H. davidcummingii. It is about 4 1/2 ft in length and all of a sudden looks a bit shriveled. No signs of rot or any insects or such so i;'m not sure whats going on with it. Seems like I read someplace that maybe Carol had the same problem with this one once so i'm going to make plenty of cuttings and start a new pot of it just in case something happens to the original plant.

Spring has got to be in the air because almost all of my cactus plants either have buds or open flowers on them already and for some of them it is just a bit early for them to be blooming.

You lucky lucky gardeners. I would kill for temperatures in the forties. This morning in Burlington it was minus 16 degrees not factoring in windchill. At my house - one hour outside of Burlington - it was minus 24 degrees, but on the brighter side, my H. Multiflora is about to burst into bloom.

And up here in Canada we're fighting through another sub-zero cold spell that's just starting to warm up. We're up to 20F today!! Woo Hoo!!!

And, for me, its H. Compacta that's going to give me the first flowers of the year in a few weeks.

Yep...spring will take a while to get here, we often have freezes yet in May. Winter took so long to get here, that I'm wondering if Spring will take equally as long....that would be about June 1st, then, LOL!!

But....we're expecting 40's by the weekend, and IMHO, the plants think it's spring in February, so I've been seeing new growth on many plants recently!!!

Well, it was snowing here in the Chicagoland area today, but the longer days have had a wonderful effect on my Hoyas. The ones sitting in the south facing window seem to think spring is here already. I just noticed peducles on my H. cv Iris Marie, H. davidcummingii, H. heuschekiana and H. obscura and lots of flowers on my H. lacunosa (love that smell!) The weather outside may be "frightful"...but it's not so bad inside!!!

Just listening to the weather forcast - we're to be in the mid to upper fifties this week, into the lower sixties next week. WOOOOHOOOO!! I so much want to believe spring is just around the corner. I really don't know when I've had spring fever as bad as I have it this year!! Tami and Awanda - send your weather our way!! I, too, have lots of growth on my hoyas - very happy about that. Spring can't be far away....

We are having steady 70s right now here....and I am loving it! Soon it will be too hot to breathe.... I am going to see about moving mine outside next week, I have spring break so it's really my only time to devote to this. This year I am trying something new. Last year I built an addition to my little greenhouse made from treated lumber. It is right behind my 6X6 aluminum GH. I covered both frames with plastic, making essentially a 12X6. Right now it is full of overwintered outdoor plants and cacti and succulents. Next week most of those will hopfully be moving out into the gardens. My plan for this spring and summer is to pull back the plastic on the wooden part so that it is open, but leave the shade cloth, therefore making a little shadehouse for my hoyas and such. I don't have any good porch space for them, and last summer they didn't do much. Then my cacti and succulents will hang out under the portion that still has plastic so that they don't get soaked when we get our infrequent but drowning rains. Last summer I lost more to rot then I want to think about. I figure the hoyas though won't mind this. I was quite proud of this little GH as I built the wooden part from scratch, no plans and no help. I'll post a pic when I get home, I don't have the pic on the computer here at the lab.

Definitely spring here, have a look at my hanging basket - I planted these and they're gorgeous! The hoyas are reacting well to lots of sunshine and I've spotted quite a few buds coming up, so here's hoping *crosses fingers*.

Yay for spring!

Ms. K it'll still be a couple of weeks before I have the new gh up and running. I've been so darn busy trying to plan 2 surprise 50th birthday parties for my wonderful hubby. It is extremely draining trying to sneak around and do stuff. It's almost over tho, one surprise is this Sunday. The church will be decorated with black balloons, crepe paper and over the hill signs:-). I have also requested our members to wear black. The second surprise is on the 25th and that is being held at home, so that one is a bit more difficult to pull off:-).

Blessings,
Awanda
