First sight of the rhubarb

Southern Mountains, GA(Zone 6b)

I guess it's a veg, or is it a fruit? I think of it as a fruit and I'm so glad to see it . It will be awhile before I can pick any but here's some emerging from the soil. It's Victoria.

Actually that is a true vegetable, since you eat the plant not its seedpods.

Good to know Farmerdill. Thanks.

Mine has just started coming up but we have had abnormally cold weather for a few weeks and everything was nipped back. I like rhubarb crisp and thats a dessert!!

We have had an unusually mild winter and spring. So my rhubarb is up to about 16to18 inches, looking great, and it snowed! And then froze! We did think ahead, and covered them up. So hopefully, we will still have rhubarb shortly. We're right outside Reno, Nevada at about 5500 feet, that means that April is never very nice-usually sends as a kicker every year. Joan

Wow, that stalk's immense Roseone.

Southern Mountains, GA(Zone 6b)

Sorry, that is a close up and the stalk wasn't enormous, only about 7 or 8 inches. The freezing weather we had in the interim destroyed it anyway. It's making a mini-come back and I'm hoping for the best.

My rhubarb has come up through the winter mulch and is about a foot high. There's a rhubarb crisp coming to my table real soon now, but today's cold wind is not doing much to encourage it to grow. the variety I have has nice big fat stalks, so it doesn't take many of them to make something.

Hi, rhubarb specialists. I am in z 7b, if not 8. My neighbors (Molly) have several rhubarb plants, but apparently they are bolting, I have never seen anything like that (I grew up with rhubarb in cooler climes). DH also just bought one - Victoria - which seems to grow here in the south judging from roseone33's post from GA. Why is Molly's rhubarb doing this strange thing? She has hers in full sun, and DH is planning to put his in full sun as well. We have had quite a bit of rain lately, could that be the cause?

Thanks for your ideas.

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Do you mean it is sending up flower/seed stalks? I just break them off to make the plant focus it's energy on making more stalks and leaves. Keep it watered and it should go for a while yet. Mine is just showing red nubs above the mulch. It's quite a bit slower than last year because we had a hard winter and just a couple of weeks ago it was still covered with snow. What a difference a year makes.

I am NOT a vegetable or fruit grower, but I have a good friend in GA that REALLY wants a BIG rhubarb start. I have some nice pink tall lilies if any one would be interested in trading. I'm going to post a notice on the plant trade too. PLK.

Are the leaves from rhubarb good for anything?

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Making leaf impressions for stepping stones!

Chapel Hill, NC(Zone 7b)

Take two mature leaves, cut them up, put them in a quart of boiling water, steep until water is cool. Strain. Put in spray bottle. This is supposed to be an insecticide, but we have heard only about aphids (an aphidicide?).

We are hoping to get some leaves from our neighbors, then we'll try it too.

Hi, this is a picture of my grandmothers rhubarb. I drove over and took it when she passed away. Even thought I don't much care for the tart taste,. I charish this plant. I love to watch it come up each spring!

The ruhbarb you sent me is doing great. I will try to take a picture of it for you. Thanks again for sending it to me. Everyone who comes over notices it and I always tell them it came all the way from a friend in Oregon.

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Wonderful!! The mother plant is growing fast, up to the middle of my thigh. I hope you gave yours lots of room to expand.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I may have to move it. I put all 3 pieces you sent me in a half wooden barrel.

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

You might want to let them grow in the barrel for this season and divide them in the fall. I'm glad they are growing!
