Emotionally distraught Charlie needs help!

Chesapeake, VA

Or maybe I am the one who needs help. Charlie is an 11 yr old, who came to us as a stray at about 2 years of age. From the beginning, he has 'freaked' out whenever the doorbell rings, or someone knocks on the door, if a stranger comes into the house or there are loud noises (like doors slamming, plastic bags near him, fire alarm, etc). He flattens himself to the floor and disappears as quickly as he can and won't come out until well after the 'danger' has left. We have often traveled for several days at a time, and have left him at home (with lots of water and food), for up to 4 days. He was always glad to see us and life went on. So, we had a 10 day trip scheduled, and, thinking he would rather stay at home than the kennel, we made arrangements for our neighbor's son to come in once a day to feed & water, and to clean the litter box. 10 days is a long time, I know, but I thought he'd be ok. Well, to make a long story short, while we were gone, the carbon monoxide detector went off, and when our neighbor came over, had to take the battery out in order to shut it off. (no leak, however). We arrived home late on Saturday night, and Charlie came to greet us, and started meowing. Can I say that he didn't stop meowing all that night, all the next day, nor did he sleep until about 8 pm the following night? Then he slept close to us until 6 am the next morning. However, upon awakening, he resumed meowing. When I mean meowing, I mean constantly. One time I counted 37 meows in 1 minute He sounds like a baby crying and is quite loud so you can't really ignore it. He stops meowing only when you pick him up to hold him, but he is not the cuddly type so only allows that for a short time, even though I pick him up frequently. I have fed and fed him, walked around outside with him, and basically haven't left his side for 2 1/2 days, but he doesn't stop meowing. I know he has been traumatized by the carbon monixide detector, and possibly our being gone. We've tried everything but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any suggestions?
