Hello All.
Thanks to the kindness and generosity of another DG member, I am now lovingly doting over a number of Brugmansia seedlings, including those from two 'Tiara' crosses: 'Shaman's Dream' X 'Tiara' and 'Vixen' X 'Tiara'. As 'Tiara' is a double (I believe), what can I reasonably expect in the way of doubles in the seedlings? Is it highly variable, or can I expect X% to be doubles? Any comments would be appreciated. This is my first foray into Brugs from seedlings and I am intriqued by the possibilities.
Thank you.
Erick
Brugmansia Seedling Genetics Question
Erick,
A quick answer to your question since that I am so tired and sleepy right now. In short, you should expect some doubles from either of the crosses. I don't recall what the % of doubles that should be expected in crosses using the double as the pollen donor. The best I remember though, you would expect a greater % of doubles when the pod parent is a double.
Maybe someone will come along who's head is in better shape than mine is now and give you a more accurate answer.
Good question Erick! This will be an interesting thread..
On one hand, I'd love to know in advance... On the other hand, I'd hate to spoil the excitement of discovering a double.. that's priceless!
When my first double seedling bloomed last year, I called everyone I know.. it was like getting a grandchild or something! Best gift ever.
ZZ
Funny!!!
Well, this is a good thread and Erick asking a question I also have- thanks!
So, most of my 7 batches of seedlings are from double-flowered pod parents, so yippee!!! It is so thrilling to see your babies bloom, period. With doubles.........I may need a stretcher- my hubby will hear me screeching- heck, the whole neighborhood will!! lol!
Brenda
Yeah Brenda.. you just wait.. It is sooo exciting. I ran around like a nut... I was shaking so bad.. LOL I'm not sure what was more entertaining.. me or the bloom! LOL (I stoled a bud so I knew it was a double when the bud was only like 2" long) I can't help it. I got tears when I got the first whiff of her fragrance.. What a sissy huh?
I had 2 doubles out of 18 seedlings that I kept last year. I don't know if anyone else got doubles out of the all the ones I got rid of. (like 60)
ZZ
I'm keeping all these the first year, and your odds were better than 10%, so I may get 6 doubles!
How's that for countin' your doubles before they bloom? Think I'm a little premature? I know my family will be ready to commit me this Fall!
BTW, these are not my seeds, but I may be getting a large greenhouse or sunroom soon, to remedy that issue!
Brenda
ROFL !! Joyceee, I can just see you now gf :)) By the way, I DO have 2 or 3 small, very small seedlings!! It is sooo exciting.
Brenda, you're a great brug Mommy now. You'll just have soooo much fun waiting for blooms and colors:))
Congrats!!!
Erick, I have some Tiara seeds with Tiara as the pod parent. I can't wait for them to grow up! This is just so exciting.
David, my Tiara and my DD are both doing well. I am so looking forward to blooms this Spring and Summer. God bless, Margo
Margo,
I missed the thread where you said when you started you seeds. My little fellers have been outside for almost a week, and they look so healthy. Deep green and big leaves.
Here is how they looked a while back, inside under lights.
And boy, my cuttings look rough! If I hadn't done this last year, I would never believe my cuttings will grow into huge "small" trees by August.
BTW, Margo, you look so good in your "new me" photo, heartfelt congratulations!
Brenda
Wow Brenda! Your seedlings look GREAT!! Look at the size of those leaves! Way to go!
Ha, ZZ!!
That's what lights 24/7 will do for seedlings!
They have been outside for two weeks, and have not put on too much more growth- just normal growing conditions for them now, you know, sunshine, and the weather a bit on the cool side, and they're not up to full strength fertilizer yet.
This year I'm giving them rooting tonic (plant hormones), growth tonic (plant hormones) and Mycorrhizae, along with Messenger! I'm keeping a control group, to see if there is any difference to the betterment, or to the decline, of the plants- I'm doing this with my brug seedlings and just started this regime this week! I can post the results in the Fall. Boy, I'm gonna have to keep good notes!
Brenda
