Hey Paul, is that a seedling? It can't stay in there for long can it? We are lotus deprived out here in the AZ desert, I do love peoples picture of a full blooming pic...I live vicariously.

phicks - Ya got my attention! Very cool!

So now I need details. Just a regular cleaned out empty soda bottle? Cap on or off? What kind of water did you use? How often did you change the water? What variety of Lotus is it? Where did you place the bottle for lighting and warmth?

I am definitely wanting to try growing a Lotus from seed this year. I have some tubers that I purchased that I am starting now. I've never grown Lotus before, but am soooo interested in this gorgeous plant. So am going to try my hand at growing from tuber AND seed this year. I acquired some seed from a Momo Botan Lotus. (I know they don't always turn out like the parent plant. The seeds were pollinated from bees from a nursery that carries a number of Lotus varieties. So there is no telling what the plants will be. I just love surprises!!! LOL! ) I am going to be growing them in large containers instead of a pond or bog area.

I want to know details on how you do your germination in a soda bottle! Very neat. Are you gonna cut the bottle to get it out soon? Inquiring minds want to know ......

Becky i just planted the Lotus ill post a pic of it later Paul

Paul - I would love to see a photo after you planted it!

What variety of Lotus is it?

Also, how often did you change the water while the seed was sprouting or did you? I've read that the water will sometimes get cloudy with bacteria during germination.

What a great idea!!!!

I wonder if this method of sprouting a Lotus seed would do well outside on a sunny patio? Or would direct sun be too intense for such a tender seedling?

here it is its a Sacred Pink

Paul - Is your Sacred Pink Lotus a large variety?

I have Momo Botan which is a Dwarf Lotus which grows about 2-3' tall and almost as wide. I don't know if you are aware of this, but often Lotus seeds are not true to the parent plants. Mine were pollinated by bees at a nursery that sells all kinds of Lotus (dwarf, medium, and large of all colors). So there is no telling what exactly our Lotus and their flowers will look like until maturity.

Do you grow other varieties of Lotus?

I would love to try this if anyone has any extra seeds for postage.
This is so cool.

jltbaw - A friend of mine got lotus seeds from a craft store. She bought the dried seed pods that had a number of lotus seeds in them. The pods are used for flower arrangements. Just an idea. I don't have anymore seeds at this time. Gave the few extras I had away. But you could also try asking any of the water garden businesses for seeds. That's where I got my seed pod from. They will probably sell them to you cheap. Just a thought. Good luck!

Paul - I'd love to see a photo of the yellow lotus bloom if you have a photo to share. I have lotus that are supposed to be pink, red, and a white one. All dwarf varieties. Mine have not bloomed yet. They are starter plants from tubers. Are yours full-sized lotus or dwarfs?

You've inspired me to try, once again, to grow Lotus (shhhh Lynn, I know, I know, we've discussed, hehe). I have 6 little seeds that came in the mail today that I'm going to try with this bottle starting method. I haven't really figured out how to keep humidity around the plant during the summer months, but I'm determined to figure this out somehow, lol.

Anyway, thanks for the bottle sprouting idea!!
