I have a large plumie that I am moving. It is about 7 ft. tall. I have already dug it it and put it in the ground but I was wondering if they need anything special when transplanting. Something that would make the transition easier.
I also would like to cut off a large brach at the base of the tree. (5-6ft) It is shaped kind of like a upside down tri-pod and I am scared it will get knocked off by kids, or strong winds. It doesn't balance very well because of the shape.
So anyways, when would be a good time to trim this branch off, which of course I would like to root and have another tree or 2.
Thanks for your help.
Moving a plumie
This is the dormant season (they are just starting to wake up) and transplanting is best done at this time. You can take a cutting any time, but again, now is good, since they will soon start a new growth spurt which will make rooting more reliable.
Having said that, a large branch will almost always root.
Good luck!
Ariel,
You can mix some Vitamin B-1 or Superthrive with water and then water with the mixture following the transplant and for several days afterwards.
Since you are in Zone 9b, I would have recommended that you wait until your last frost date has passed before transplanting. Roots have a hard time adjusting in cold soil so I hope your area remains warm from now until next fall since you have already transplanted.
The best time to root cuttings is when the weather is warm during the day and night. When nights stay above 50, you are in good shape to start rooting outside or in the ground.
You should stake any cutting that cannot support itself without a root system. Use a plastic or bamboo stake and green stretchy ties and place the stake right up against the cutting for support. The stake can be removed once the large cutting is rooted.
Dutchlady and Clare,
Thanks so much for the advice.
