An Adventure In Cooking With Asian Vegetables ...

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

When we stopped by the Asian Market in Memphis, TN on Saturday, we bought ...

Chayto Squash reputed to be good for high blood pressure. I bought 6 and 2 of them I'm going to try to grow. They are a perennial and must have a long hot growing period, so I thought if this summer is like the last one, maybe I can grow it here. I had bought one at Wal-Mart to cook to see if we liked them and we did. I pan fried them, lid on, with sweet onion in a tad of butter and they were very good.

Bitter Melons - I was going to get Bitter Melons because they are reputed to lower the blood sugar level, but they didn't look fresh.

Taro - I got 6 small Taro bulbs not to eat but to plant, I like their foliage.

Napa Cabbage

Long Purple Eggplant

Daikon, long white radish

Bean Sprouts, plus mung beans to sprout here at home.

BabySpinach

2-3 bundles of unknown vegetables.

I was following behind a middle aged Asian lady and she kept trying to tell me what things were and how to use them, but I couldn't understand what she was saying.

I have almost zero experience communicating in person with anyone not from my area, USA Mid-South, and I didn't want to cause her distress, so I said "Thank You" often and got whatever she did. Come to think of it, she might have been telling me not to follow along behind her, but if so she did it with a smile. lol

I'm going to take pictures of the "unknowns" to post here in hopes that MaVie or others will tell me what they are and suggest how I should prepare them.

I'm off to put away groceries, but I think I've run out of room. lol

I so hope this will be fun!!!
