Starting Basil from seed
You can direct sow basil after your last frost date, or you can start it ahead inside... I start basil inside under lights each year, and I wrote out the methods I use (including Tom DeBaggio's great clump transplanting technique) here, http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/589725/.
I found basil pretty easy to start from seed. I started some in the house with my seed starting set up (shelving with lights). And then I also stuck some seeds in the ground in my vegetable garden and that worked fine too.
I started mine from seed 3-4 years ago - have not bought any since - I get plenty of volunteers every year now.
Basil doesn't seem to self-sow for me... but then, I'm in zone 6. :-)
Doesn't self sow for me either and thanks for the info Critter.
Much appreciated.
You're welcome!
That's one of the threads I was hoping to get linked to the new sticky, because it's a link I seem to post whenever the subject of growing basil comes up...
