help with importing DVD video to pc

I hope I can make this clear- I have some video on a DVD that I want to take out a clip from. The only way I can get it to my hard drive is with Nero7-(I also have Roxio suite, power DVD, and others, but they all need a video cappture device) I can save the video, but it is in .vob format, and nothing else can open it so I can edit it. Any help here will be much appreciated- Thanks
