Problem DS-70

San Francisco, CA

I've had this plant for almost 2 years. It is very healthy and vigorous- I have been tucking the new stems back up into the basket to keep the plant more compact for the last year. Today I unwound it and surprise- it's all ONE stem that is over 6 feet long. The problem is- not a single peduncle to be seen. I thought this was an early and easy bloomer. Has anyone else had DS-70 so slow to initiate blooming?

Well I am going to give you some advice you once gave me, cut that baby up and root it back in the pot. That is too funny. I have to tell you my DS-70 blooms constantly and puts on peduncles all the time. I don't understand why yours doesn't. I do recall, and I think it was nightbloomer (Susan) that said her's didn't bloom either. I had two large plants of it, one in a east window full sun, and one in a west window full sun, loved the sun and loves water. The sun is much to intense in July and August and I did have to move them.

Thanks, Tami, I will cut it and reroot about half, the other half I'm wrapping around the pot for now. Mine is near a south facing window, but a few feet from the glass and with a sheer curtain between the two. It seems really happy, and the leaves look great, just no peduncles! How old was yours when it started?

Mark, one was in a 6" pot, one in an 8"pot, they were full pots, but the stems only hung down a little below the bottom of the pots. Once they grew to about 10" they started to grow peduncles. I should add that I repotted them both last spring and lost them both and only managed to save a small piece of it. They both just started to wilt and I never figured out what caused it. But the piece I saved is in a 4.5" hanging basket and it grew peduncles all winter and has about 12 on it. It is really root bound. It doesn't get alot of humidity either. It is cool though your long stem, it would be really pretty if it sprung out some peduncles all the way down the stem, like a garland.

That would be cool. I'll have to have a word with it...

When I was new to hoyas, I did not know to keep pundacles and to not cut when they were growing. I thought my hoya was so cool that I loved to share. I would give friends cuttiings and the hoya would grow new pundacles and bloom less than a month after each trimming. I am now a little more cautious to trim and do not get as many new blooms.
