Aeschynanthus tricolor

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

well, I am fairly busy pinching off buds these days, but the lipsticks are blooming. This is tricolor, which I got as a small cutting last year. I'd forgotten about it until I found it blooming in the propagation tray - it had been forming buds under the leaves of other plants. I fairly love this one and will have to propagate it - I've only got two short stems on it right now.

very nice, I have never seen a lipstick with such unusual flowers.

what's amazing to me is that this is a species - in other words, nature made this flower. There are other similar ones out there but I love the short flower and the big calyx (the "cup") and the black markings.....

nature does a better job at times, I have a few lipsticks, and sure they have long bright flowers, but your short flower with its black markings has far more character and is more attractive than the long flashy flowers.........wonder if I can find this guy up here.....
