I have 70-80 orange trees, all of them get plenty of irrigation, my question is can all my vining squash be trained up the trees? IŽll use nets to support the fruits. What do you think?? My worry is that it may be a bit shaded for them.
Growing vining pumpkins & squash up trees
I think it would depend (as you mentioned) on how much sun you get. It is a common practice to train some of the smaller fruited squash up trees that have died, so the up the tree bit would be fine. I would think that picking the fruit off the vines would be the biggest challenge.
I would certainly give it a try, if it doesn't work you won't have lost much, if it does work... well, then post pictures :)

My grandma used to grow butternut squash at the back of the garden, and they would scramble up the row of arborvitae trees (http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/74801/index.html) at the edge of her yard. I have a memorable image of big tan squashes hanging from the trees like oversized Christmas ornaments! I believe Grandpa got out the ladder to harvest them. :-)
critterologist,
Did your grandmother have to support the squash or is the vine able to support them? I know butternut have a strong stem and vine so I guessing no support!
