New Colocasia!!!!!

Louisville, KY

Well my breeding of new Colocasias has started to produce some very interesting results. A few things I am trying to breed are GIANT black colocasias, I am talking about something much larger than what anyone has seen so far. I am also trying to breed colocasias that will survive further north. I am testing some black hardy colocasias now that have survived our zone6 winters for the past two years. A lot of the hybrids seem to look very similar to what many of us are already growing But some are starting to show some very nice colorations and habits.

I thought I would show this strange seedling. It may very well be hardier than most forms and it looks like it may have some colorations similar to Illustrius. What do you guys thing. It maybe impossible to tell what this plant will do for now but so far it has impressed me hopefully it will keep it up. Something for us to look forward to at least.

Most seedlings will not show their true color till they have reached over 3 feet tall. So still not sure what to expect.

Nice colours

Lovely face and beautiful stem color. Any chance it will retain the more reddish stem?

I believe so the parents of the this plant should help it keep the nice pink stems. I will post more as it grows.

Its good to see some dirt under that finger nail..... shows a real plant person! hehehh

I get durt under my toe nails LOL. I am sure some can relate I never have very clean hands.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

I can! lol It takes awhile to get it all out from under the nails and I only do it when, on the very rare occasion, I have to dress up. When you grow for a living, when your fingers are in the dirt all the time, it soon becomes too much of a pain, when you know that you will be back in the dirt the next morning. Too tired at night....

hehe. I know what you mean. My thumbs used to split from getting dried out cause of the salts in the compost.
Too much paper work now though.

cool colocasia, keep us updated on progress.

This is a new collected species from a very good friend. He called it Colocasia Dark Star. The center will get a dark pattern in it. A little bit similar to nancys revenge?

This was also collected it looks very similar to fontensii but a more pointed leaf and a white dot in the center of each leaf. It should be very interesting to work with.
