New Greenhouse

Geneva, FL(Zone 9b)

My partner and I are puttng up a new greenhouse. it is one of the ones from FarmTek--the Solar Star--48 ft. long X 20 wide X 10.7 ft. tall. I thought it would be a cinch, but it has proved challenging for us, the uninitiated in construction. LOL Since this pic, baseboards have been added and the purlins finished. Tomorrow, the rest of the framing on the ends goes in. Hopefully soon the poly-carbonate end panels and double layer plastic sheet siding will be installed. This is one heck of a learning experience as well as a lesson in extreme patience! LOL

That is going to be awesome, Brad! Good luck with installation! Are you putting it on top of grass or does some material go on the bottom? How's the puppy?

Geneva, FL(Zone 9b)

Hey Clare,

It'll have fabric and pebbles over the dirt floor.

The puppy is getting BIG and rather hyper too--LOL typical pup.

Nice sized structure.. yes .assembly is always more than it might seem.. but not everything is made right... and knowing the difference between that... and doing it slightly wrong.. is where the experience is most helpful..good luck with it..Gordon

WoW !!! That's a really nice size green house. I could lear to fill one that large.

There are definitely some "slightly wrongs" in the construction. LOL Hopefully no one else will notice. LOL
We did the best we could, and as long as the rest goes togther, I ain't tellin'!

Brad,
You left out a bolt in the second half circle I can see it in the picture.
Looks like a lot of work for a school teacher but sure you managed to get it up just fine. Are you going to plant plumies in the ground or is that just for storage? Do the walls roll up for some circulation? We looked at a smaller on for our yard still thinking about it.

LOL-- Roger, the two of us have been working on this thing in our spare time for about 6 weeks now. It seems endless doing it bit by bit on weekends and holidays. Yeh, it'll have the roll up walls, as well as several fans and vents; propane heat for the winter time. The ends are solid, double paned, polycarbonate panels. The one thing that is the slowest is having to use an impact driver for just about every single screw and bolt on this thing (except the purlin clamps and ground posts.) I mean, there are hundreds and hundreds of these things that have to be forced through two pipes at a time and it'll wear you out after a while. We got a decent battery powered one. Keep on battery on the charger at all times. LOL Anyway, it'll be nice not having to freak out next winter if there is a freeze.

Nice setup Brad..
Looks like alot of work bud..

hey brad,

looking good already. just the skeleton of a gh gets me excited. i start thinking about winter blooms and relaxing in the hot, humid gh when it's cold outside.

you mentioned "double layer plastic sheet siding" above. is this a product that farmtek carries?

Brad, I picked up one of the propane forced air heaters at a Flea market for 20.00 and saw one just like it for 40000 in a book so did pretty good worked real good this winter for the cold nights. I was using my Gas Grill before that and it worked really well with a fan blowing the warm air around. Looks like a lot of work but like you said next winter you will be able to sleep on those cold nights knowing you got HEAT.

Hey Dete,,
I don't know where Brad get his supplies but for GH and heaters and anything else i have a hugh catalog from Growers Supply which is a divison of Farmtek.

Hi Dete,

Yes, this is from Farm-Tek. They have been running a lot of specials lately, so check ou the link Lopaka provided. You can also call and request a free catalogue. The catalouges tend to be easier to follow as they usually feature the greenhouses and the specials on them in the front.

Hey Brad, how about an update on your progress?

Heres a pic of mine from this winter, made by the same company.
This one is 16x24 and uses a different type of plastic.

Wellllllllll---ahem--the warm weather came upon us, and suddenly, the greenhouse got put on hold while I potted about 60 X 7-10 gallons into 15 gallons; about 40 X 15 gallons into 25s, and a few others into 40 gallon pots. Now, trying to scramble to get said nursery up and running in time for April's deadline for Ebay and website--ARRGGHHHHH!! LOL Here's some pics of what's happening at the Buds and Blooms these days:

One of the things I love most about working outdoors in rural central Florida this time of year: Citrus blossoms! My trees are just starting and man they smell great!

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Lol Brad from teacher to full blown nursery man where do you find the time??
The citrus smell is awesome just like jasmines and most peeps don't know how wonderful the flowers smell..

Geneva, FL(Zone 9b)

Robert, I don't know where I find the time either--but it seems I am always working. LOL

In about a week, my three big citrus trees will be in full bloom. Ahhhhhh......man, that scent is so awesome.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Brad, I'm exhausted just seeing all that you do. I don't know how you do it! I love citrus blossoms too. My orange and tangerine are in full bloom right now, and it is awesome.

Robert, I'll be sending you some tangerines any day now. They are almost ready to be picked.

ohhh Yum Yum Clare!
I look foward to it, thanks Clare.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Oh, Clare.. the tree looks like the one I had in CA... I really miss that tree. It was an orange and I went out, picked oranges and made my juice... never been able to do that in my life but the 5 years I lived there and had that tree were wonderful. I miss all the lemon trees everwhere too... everyone I knew giving away bags of huge yummy lemons!

Tammie

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Tammie, that is my orange tree, and the oranges are so sweet and delicious. I make a fruit smoothie every day and always put a fresh-picked orange in it. My tangerine tree is on the other side, and the fruit is just starting to ripen. I have a lemon tree too, and it too is blooming. I always have more lemons than I can use so I give them away too. You know, you could have a dwarf orange tree to grow in a container and keep in your greenhouse in the winter. They are making some really nice dwarf ones these days. I only rent here so these are not really my trees, and someday, I will have to leave them. I will definitely miss them.

Hey, Brad. Did you see Terry's greenhouse picture here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3327290 It looks really cool.
