Celebrate the day - March 2nd is Texas Independence day!
Maybe OT
Thanks for the reminder, Bubba. 171 years since breaking off with Mexico in 1836. Must have required a lot of courage for Sam Houston and cohorts to dare that feat.
Well, Halleluia!!! and long live Texas!!!
I'm a transplanted yankee, and did not know that.
Yay! Freedom from the Mexican tyrants!!! :o))
Santa Anna's army crossed right through my area and burned every plantation, house and mill and in sight. Alexander Hodge led all of the women and children from the area safely to an area near the Battle of San Jacinto.
Hooray for Sam Houston!
definitely off topic here too; but it shows you where my mind is theses days-lol
Full lunar eclipse tomorrow night:

How are ya Bubba?
Texan born and die here too God willing!
Texas born here too.:) DH is decended from the original German settlers of New Braunfels on his Mom's side and original German settlers of Fredericksburg on his Dad's side.
Native Houstonian! Not too many of us left.
I was born in Houston, but I have to admit I am happier up here. Climate suits me better.:)
I'd give an eye and a tooth to live in Fredericksburg!
We like it very much. We bought DH's grandparents house in 1990 and don't plan to leave. After 11 years in the army and 11 moves I told DH the next time I move I'm going out in a casket!
I can certainly understand that! We just love visiting there. We'd love to move to Wimberly.....my favorite place.
Wimberely is very pretty. There is a really nice glass blowing business there.
Born in Houston and still here after all these many years. Going out in a casket from here, too. I remember when Mar 2 and San Jacinto Day were school holidays.
Ann
We know the guy that owns that glass blowing business. He's my FIL's 'other son'. Haha. We have quite a few of his pieces here.
Another native Houstonian! Hooray!
I need to take some Swarvsky crystal pieces to them to fix. DD dropped them years ago and broke many. All the breaks are in the joints though, so they should be easy to fix.
What part of Houston did ya'll grow up in?
I grew up here, in Sugar Land, a suburb of Houston. My grandmother lives in Pine Forest on the NW side and I spent much time there as a child.
I grew up in Bellaire, SW part of Houston. I have a brother now who lives in Sugar Land and a cousin in Cypress Fairbanks.

When I started kindergarten, my Mom went back to work. She arranged for me to go to someones house after school which ended at noon. The last name of one lady that I stayed with was Nolan I think. I don't know how it was spelled.
I know right where all of those areas are. I recently stopped working (yeah!) - I was near River Oaks. Not a very fun drive.
Congratulations on retirement! River Oaks would be a long drive. Don't remember exactly where that is, but I know it's not close to Sugar Land. I've forgot most of what I knew about Houston. I just don't store things in my head that don't get used.:)
Thank you! It isn't exactly retirement...I had quit working when my DD wasin elementary and went back to work when she was in 4th grade. I worked for 2 years and decided that my place, for now, is at home with the family. I was missing out on too many important things. So, we'll call it an extended 'leave' for the time being. I'll probably go back to work once she is in college.
River Oaks is right inside the loop, very near the Galleria. Aarrgh! The traffic was a nightmare. I sure don't miss it.
From the time I was 4 until I was 10 we lived in Avalon Place just outside River Oaks and I went to River Oaks Elementary. After WWII started all the live in maids went to work in defense plants and w/the big houses we all lived in it was impossible for the mothers to do all the housework ass'd w/such a big place so we moved to Garden Villas to a smaller - much smaller - house. Now that I live in Katy Area everything is all turned around and I don't know if I could find RO now. I have lived there and after DDH and I married we have lived in Pasadena, Deer Park, Meadows, and since coming back to Gods country, Houston, right here. All over the place. Can still find my way back to Sugar Land and along Hwy 59. Lots of moves in lots of years - Even France outside Rouen.

Knolan, I was very lucky when my kids were little that I didn't have to work. DH was in the army and that reliable check was really nice. We moved here
in 90 and started a business and I had to go to work. But atleast the youngest was in kindergarten. DH had to get used to taking DD to kindergarten and found out she had definite ideas about lunches. He didn't know he was supposed to just know when she wanted to take her lunch and when to buy it.:) It was pretty funny. I worked at various things for about 2 years, and now I work in the business with DH. I can't imagine wanting to retire or change jobs - unless it would be full time gardener.:)
Ann, when did you live in France?
I was born in Germany but both my parents and both sets of grandparents called texas home. One set of grandparents were in west minster and the others were in jasper. Dad retired and we lived in jasper until I graduated.
Shell sent all seven of us to France in "73 and we came back in '74. Wouldn't have missed it but wouldn't want to do it again.
Ann
Before my great-great-grandmother married in Tennessee and eventually got to Texas, her brother was here. He fought for Texas independence and was killed at Goliad.
Fascinating family histories. However, I'm confused Renate, are your parents German?
Ann, I know what you mean about "wouldn't have missed it, but wouldn't do it again". The army sent us to Germany twice for a total of six years. Ou DS was born in Heidelberg the first trip. And DD went to a German kindergarten for almost 3 years on the second trip. It was a good experience for the most part. We got to see and experience some things that I know had a big effect on the way we look at everything.
no.. both are american, both raised in Texas
