I planted some begonia dragon wing seeds, and they have sprouted!!! They are the tiniest little things, hubby can't even see them, but I do. My question is, now that they are up, how long do I leave em under the cover?
Thanks for any help, these are my first begonia babies.
LA
I got babies!!!
Congrats, LA!
thank you GH, I am thrilled they sprouted, now if only I knew what to do with them next!!!
I would have no idea how long to leave them, but I'd think till they were a couple inches at least. Where did you get your seed? I saved some seeds, or what I think are seeds, from some of my angel wings but haven't planted any yet.
I received them from a very kind DG'er in a trade...so I really want to do well for them.
There might be more information in the stickies. I need to find out more, too, so will let you know what I come up with.
Sounds like you are off to a great start! I think you should leave them until they are large enough to transplant or separate. If they are happy covered, I would leave them covered after the transplant as they likely would have become acclimated to the humidity. Then as they are larger, slowly start to open the lid (or what ever cover you have on them) and allow them to acclimated to less humidity and keep transplanting them up until they are ready to go into larger pots and out side.
I didn't read through this link so Brad's info might contradict mine, but he's a master so I would try what he recommends first - http://www.bradsbegoniaworld.com/seed.htm

oh thank you, thank you, thank you :)))
my pleasure, both links are via the Sticky thread. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/626497/
and I encourage begonia lovers to cruise through Brad's web site. He is very knowledgeable and after visiting his greenhouse last year, I bow to him!! He has an amazing touch with begonias!!
I leave mine (fibrous and turberous) under cover for a week after they have germinated. I light them for 18 hours a day. The key is to feed them with 1/2 strength, water soluble fertilizer (miracle grow) right from the beginning. These instructions from Stokes for Dragon Wing should apply:
http://www.stokeseeds.com/isroot/StokesSeeds/webroot/ftp/detail_growing/begonia.html
If you keep them under cover too long, the soil will not dry out and you won't be able to feed them. Be careful when you first remove the cover. The soil tends to dry out VERY QUICKLY as the moisture is sitting in the top 1/4" of soil if they have been growing over heat. If you can grow them in a room with warm days and cool nights (with 16 hours of light) that is great.
