So my question is can we grow them successfully? I don't really remember ever seeing them growing, but maybe I just missed it. Even though is says they grow in Zone 9, I know that doesn't necessarily mean that they grow here. Been there done that!
Anyway, I would love input and any suggested varieties if we can grow them. I would be interested in the shorter plants with smaller flowers because I want to put them in a border.
Thanks for the help!!
Houston and Dahlias
2005, bought from the dahlia coop and they died, I think for lack of sufficient moisture
2006 bought for coop and some from HD, planted inground in the moistest (sp?) area in my yard and had wonderful blooms all summer. They are supposed to be perennial but it remains to be seen if they will come back. I don't see any action yet, but it might be early.
2007 didn't buy any more, waiting to see if last year plants will return. If they don't I will likely buy 1-2 a year and treat them as annuals.
I'd recommend buying from HD, to experiment, if nothing else.
just wanted to add I was referring to the dahlias solld in packages.
i do absolutely horrible w/ the dahlias sold in the six packs, just horrible. they don't last a week for me.
Thanks for the info. I think I will make a trip by HD and see if they have what I am looking for. I think they are gorgeous, but don't see them actually planted, so wasn't sure if it was just another inappropriate tuber that the big boxes were selling.
shuggins, I love Dahlias, but no longer attempt them in our Texas heat. A little info from Old House Gardens: http://www.oldhousegardens.com/bulb.asp?Cat=SD
I am growing Dahlias and they have came back..trick for me is morning sun and afternoon shade in moist area...Jeanne
