The only thing I dont have that I want to grow this year are Kiwano or Jelly melon. Does anyone out there have experience in growing these? Do you have any seeds to swap with? I have loads of veggie seeds to trade with.
WANT Kiwano or Jelly melon
OOoeerrr! heard it has a bland taste, can anyone confirm this?
I can.. A fe w years ago I got ahold of several of them and save d their seeds. A real pain to get the seeds out as they are encased in a jelly like sack. Had to use acid to get it of f on the first one and then discovered you can spend several hours squishign the coat off of each seed.
They are not that hard to germinate, just about like a squash, but the fruit easily mold s if ther eis to much rain and the groudn stays moist too long.
They are not much fruit. They are mainly like a rind with nothign but thousand s of thes e jelly seeds. It is the jelly seed s you eat and you don't want to eat to many as they can cause a nasty reaction and even death if a person is allergic to them.
The taste remind s me of cucumber that been picke d and peeled and not ripe yet, but with a tinge of sour taste to it almost like it spoiled.
This is one veggie I will never grow again. For me to say I would never grow it again, means it really bad experience all the way around.
edited to say. I have had experienc e, but dont have seed no more.

Hi all,
I Am getting conflicting info as to its toxicity. Here it says the seeds are edible: http://whatscookingamerica.net/Q-A/KiwanoHornedMelon.htm
Here it says it's toxic to mammals: http://www.obsess.com/fruit/kiwano
Am butting in to help out b/c I put it in the PF just the other day- lol! It feels like one of my "babies", I guess.
To be on the safe side, I would just grow it as an ornamental- lol!
