Wanted: TALL Red or Orange Phlox

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

I would like to trade for some perennial Phlox plants - tall species - RED or ORANGE (or both!). I already have pink, white and purple. Thank you!

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

I have "Starfire"(Wait,I'll have to check the tag,it maybe "Miss Candy") but it's not up yet and it's not schedule for the chopping block until late April. Cuttings are super easy to root.I could send you cuttings once they're up.

Hi P, How do you propagate Phlox?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Kay,

If you know the color you want, you should post it along with your request; I am pretty sure Phlox doesn't come in the color(s) you want. For example, 'Orange Perfection' isn't orange or red -- it's blue-red aka a purply pink. The naming of that plant) must have been a joke...or else the hybridizer felt s/he had made the momentous breakthrough into orange by having a teeny tiny less blue?

From somebody who has spent more money than she cares to admit (before the days of the internet pictures) searching for that elusive color.

hpp, didn't know if you had gotten a reply on propagating the phlox.. but i do it by division and it must be done as soon as you see it poking from the ground for good success.

Sorry, forgot to mark this as a "watched" thread.

I have Miss Candy(bright pink) and Starfire(BRIGHT red but not true red).

I bought Orange Prefection one year from Wal Mart or maybe it was Lowes on their clearance bench. Sorry little specimen but it did bloom before it finally surcumbed. I thought it was pretty close to being orange w/a pretty purple eye that match the Violet Queen monadra it was(trying to)growing with.

As Sandy said, you can propagate by divisions but you can also propagate by cuttings. In a few weeks when mine are a bit taller...16" or so,I like to cut then back by a 1/3 to 1/2. I use the trimmings to propagate. You'll need a 4-6" cutting trimmed the bottom of to a leaf node(I like to have at least two leaf nodes on a cutting),pinch out the growing tip,you can strike your cuttings directly where you want the plant in your bed or you can strike them in a pot of well draining potting mix. I've done them with and without rooting hormones with success.

When mine are big enough I can post pictures of the process.

WOW--I didn't know you could do that with cuttings, I'll try that. I got different varietys than you have. Thanks! Sandy

yup,they're a no-brainer to root.
