Empty nurseries at the big box stores

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

So far, other than seeds, bareroots & bulbs, and a few pansies they are pretty empty. Been checking nearly daily. Anything internesting in your neck of the woods?

*big box = walmart, lowes, home depot, etc

Lowes in Garland just got in a big shipment of flowers and plants. I needed some cedar mulch, so I walked through the plant aisles saying "I will not buy anything! I will not buy anything!" I'm going out of town later this week, and will start my planting when I return. Calloways has new stuff in stock now, too. It is all VERY tempting!

Calloways you say?

I'll be shopping tomorrow! Stuck at work until 9pm tonight :-(...

Went by Bruce Miller Nursery in Richardson at lunch today. The young man there said they were expecting a truckload of perennials by Wednesday. I wasn't going to buy anything, but....
they had roses in 5 gallon pots they were clearing for $3.00. How was I to resist? I bought 4!

BM Nursery is like a hidden jewel, isn't it? A friend recently bought several 1-gallon dwarf Burfords for $3.99. I found a handmade wooden trellis that I couldn't live without. Bruce Miller is definitely going on my "nursery rotation" for this year.

Larissa, Calloway's stock looked very good. And their coupons really come in handy. Feed the addiction! :-)

BM nursery is huge and has great prices. There is one Home Depot that seems to be the "mother ship" nursery in Dallas. It is off of Skillman next to where the old Don Carter East bowling alley used to be. Coincidentally it is near the "mother ship" for Half Price books on Northwest Hwy, so very convenient for the book/plant shopping combo. This HD has a separate large nursery building and greenhouse. It gets huge shipments of plants up to three months prior to all the other HDs. There is another great (but pricey) nursery on North Haven near Medical City (between Forest and Royal Lane). I found it on the earthkind website (designated earthkind retailer)

Enjoy the nice weather,

I bought Flowering Quince,Texas scarlet at Calloways in Grapevine for $7.99 (1 gal). Lowes had some nice ferns but when I went back all the Japanese Painted ferns were gone.BooHoo

ok I know where the 'mother ship' for half price books is... but can you give me directions from there to the HD? I don't live in Dallas but I go to that HPB store nearly every time I come up there.

Richard, your a man after my own heart. I sometimes take a long lunch from work and make that same trip - Half Price Books and then down to the Home Depot. Actually, that Home Depot landscape dept out on Skillman used to be a Home Depot Landscape Supply store - just like the one on 121 in Frisco. They merged the two stores, but I am not sure why.

Oh, Bruce Miller nursery. I think I may have to make a detour through Richardson today for one of the $3 roses.

I went to Walmart this weekend for groceries and ran through the nursery. They had some vegetables, herbs, and the usual winter flowers, plus tons of potted tulips for as low as 99¢. I picked up 3 pots of pink tulips, some allysum, basil, and thyme.

Richard,
The nursery on North Haven is actually North Haven Gardens. They have a really good selection of plants, including many herbs and hard to find annuals and perennials. They also have many seminars and guest speakers, but yes, they are pricey! I went by last week and found a jerusalem sage I had been looking for.

Here is the address for the Home Depot on Skillman

6000 Skillman St
Dallas, TX , 75231-7721
Phone: 214-750-5927
Website: www.homedepot.com

To get there from 1/2 price books, go east (heading away from central expressway) on northwest hwy (loop 12). Exit Skillman heading north. You'll exit and do a half loop and then travel on Skillman back over loop 12. The Home Depot is on the right. It is kind of hard to see (on a hill behind a brick retaining wall). If you see a super Target on the left, you've gone too far.

-I went there on my lunch break Monday. They are currently stacked with perennials, annuals, bulbs, shrubs, and trees. The plants are in the nursery and all around the outside of the building. The staff there is friendly and knowledgable.

I went by Calloway's and got a fatsia, oxalis and some double impatiens. Then I got some dusty miller and a fairly good sized chinese witch hazel. I did a lot of planting today. I want mooooorrrrreeeeee....*glossy eyes*
