Chirita leaf cutting

St Joseph, IL(Zone 5b)

I have a question...I put a Chirita leaf down last night and this morning it is just a little wimpy, not bad, but...does it need to be in a bag for humidity?

This question would be for our more experienced growers. Sorry I don't know.

This is the site that was given to me and I am just learning....with my first AV leaves

[HYPERLINK@www.rachelsreflections.com]
I was told to keep them real warm.....so I have a tray of AV leaves under the grow lights with the tent zipped up....they seem to be doing fine, but maybe one the good AV people will come around soon....in the meantime look at rachels' website.....good luck

Thank you.

Laura,Thats a good link Betty gave you : ) I always treat mine the same as av leaves too.I always cover them with a baggie to maintain humidity. If they are larger leaved Chiritas, they can be propagated by cutting the leaf into sections, similar to Streptocarpus propagation. I know I saw instructions some where but of course I can't remember where now.LOL Hope this helps.Good Luck : )

It is a rather large leaf so I will put it all in a baggie to maintain the humidity.
Thanks, Laura

It's a shame Allison can't access DG anymore, she is an expert on these plants! I will try and find the thread where she talked about this and if I find it, I will come back here with the link! Allison has grown Chirita's for a long time with great success in propagating them from leaves!

This is a link Allison supplied in another thread ... very good info for Chirita's ... down the page it tells about propagating from leaves .... just like AV's.

Hello, Lin and everyone......these are good sites.....thanks

You are quite welcome Gail! I have a couple of Chirita's I got from Rob's Violets a couple of months ago and two I got recently from Bluebird Greenhouses and I can't wait for them to get big and bloom. Allison was going to give me a baby of Chirita 'Hisako', but I don't know if that deal will still happen or not.

I need to try rooting some of these leaves! Mine are real small ... don't know if these plants are fast growers or not.

Well, I am going to try them Allison's way this time....I am not impressed with those I tried from your Annabelle doing it in straight vermiculite like Rachel said. Allison grows them in soil-less mix and perlite....half and half....in fact I am going to try some of the variegated pink ones next. Then, if I mess up, I still have several more plants....

I have never been able to prop chirita leaves like AV leaves. My AV leaves go into a mix of equal parts perlite vermiculite and promix (soil-less pray mix) and then in a bag or humidity dome. The thinner chirita leaves I put in 100% perlite and under a humidity dome - they have invariably rotted for me in the AV mix. The thicker leaved chirita leaves go into the same mix as AVs but I do NOT put them under a humidity dome because when I do, they always rot.

The usual disclaimer - this is how it works for me, and YMMV. There are plenty of people who report success treating them the same as AVs. If you have extra leaves, it may be good to experiment.

Thanks everyone.
