looking for the little tiny watermelon

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I can't think of the name of it, they were really popular around here last year, they were about 5 for 6.00 or so in price, and could fit in your palm. about 3 pounds each, they were so good, they were striped too,

anybody know the name, I have to find some seeds soon. Times a wasting, garden season is upon us LOL

These are called personal size watermelons and there dozens of cultivars mostly hybrids. They also come in multiple flesh colors. Johnny's sells Little Baby Flower(seeded) and Solitaire(seedless). In the open pollinated category, Baker Creek vends Golden Midget, Takii Gem, and White Wonder. Another OP is the new hampshire Midget. Twilley vend Miniput (seedless)

Good Luck,

Yes, I was there too, that's baker creek, like farmer dill suggested. I haven't bought any yet. I stillneed to go look at johnnys I'd rather have the open pollinated seeds or heirloom variety so I can save seed. but will buy what I have to to get these little sweeties LOL

Thanks Judy, glad to see you posting some.

kathy_ann,

Were those melons from the grocery store and seedless?

To get exactly those, you would have to plant those. While some "small" seeded melons might be good, they might not be just what you are hankering for..

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I was buying them from the side of the road, I cant remebmer if they had seeds

Has anyone here tried any of these varieties yet ? Are they good and flavorful ? Some of the little novelty varieties aren't as good as the larger sizes in some things.

If anyone has tried any of these, I'd sure like to hear your opinion. I'd love to grow the tiny ones, since I'm the only one who likes watermelon at my house. Much better to eat it all and not have any
cut watermelon hanging around in the fridge.

But I'd only want to try them if someone knows which varieties are actually good.

Kathyann, If you happen to find out what variety they were selling at the side of the road, please post for us.

$ 5.00 or 6.00 Each ???????????? WOW ! They may not share their secret variety if they're getting that price. Imagine how many we could grow for ourselves if we knew. LOL

No not 5.00 or 6.00 each, 6.00 for 5 watermelons. I wouldn't pay 6.00 for a big one either LOL

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Actually I looked at them in Krogers the other day and they were $5.95 each. These of course would be the the seedless ones. The only ones I have tried are New Hampshire Midget, which I did not care for and White Wonder, which is sweet but more trouble than it is worth except as a novelty melon. I n general I have not found a seedless melon with the flavor of a seeded melon.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Now that you mentioned it, the ones I bought were seedless too, jeese, that's high, I thought a buck a piece was high during watermelon season, because I had seen them on the side of the road last year for 25 cents each. Could have kicked myself for paying the l.00 a piece. they were good though, just enough for one person LOL

kathy_ann,

Below is a link to some pictures of mini watermelons. As you can see, they look much alike. Meijers supermarkets carry these palm watermelons about every week. Some more varieties among many more are: Solitare, Extasy, Minipool,

Anyone growing a small, sweet watermelon that they would suggest is worth growing? How about Sugar Baby?

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I bought some seeds for sugar baby, and black diamond , not sure how little black diamond is though

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Sugar Baby is the most popular open pollinated "icebox" type (6-15 lb). Yellow Doll is a very good hybrid. Victory http://www.victoryseeds.com/catalog/vegetable/melons/watermelons.html offerings include Arikara, Greybelle, Wills Sugar. Johnny's carries a large selction of both seeded and seedless asian hybrids. http://www.johnnyseeds.com/catalog/subcategory.aspx?category=1&subcategory=508 Baker creek has several selections of op "icebox " melons some exotics and a few standards. Blacktail Mountain which was developed by Sandhill Preservation is a popular early Sugar Baby type.

hum, i'v enot heard of victory seeds before. wonder if they pass out catalogs, Have to go and have a look see. thanks

5 watermelons for $6????? HOLY CATS! Even in the heart of watermelon season (and I live in a farming area) watermelons are NEVER less than $3 each. Which is exactly why I've been trying to grow my own.

I have some Sugar Baby Watermelon seeds that I'm going to try this year. Last year I bought a plant from HD and it produced a watermelon about the size of a roma tomato and that was it.

What's the Queen Anne Pocket like? I've enjoyed reading about it and hope to see for myself this summer, but so far, my melon talents have proved dismal...
