I have babies...:-)
nice babies....have fun with them. I bought 10 seeds and got 3 sprouts...they are growing like little weeds now that I put em in bigger pots.
Hi JodyC and welcome to the Plumeria Forum! Congrats on your new babies! The nice thing about seedlings is they can turn out to look like the parent plant or something completely different! That is one of the reasons why seeds are so fun. I just posted one of my articles about plumerias over at Gardens.com and for Dave's, and it should appear soon when you click on the Articles tab above. It shows some of my seedlings in various stages of growth. I have some that are not even a year old and some which are 38 months old. About ten of my seedlings have flowered for the first time, and it is always so much fun waiting to see what they will look like. Since your parent plant is a rainbow, you have a good chance that your flower will not be white and will be multi-colored also. Here is my 'Intense Rainbow' below.
Hi everyone...I'll be praying that at least one of them looks something close to it's pod parent..lol..I think it's a beautiful color...I'm sure I'll be buying a rooted cutting from e-bay soon...The older the sooner it will bloom..correct? does more tips make a difference also.I noticed they add that to the auctions,if it has two tips or five tips...Do they smell good? I've never smelled one before..I hope so beacuse I have a lot of new members added to my inside during the winter (constantly growing more seeds of tropicals)plant family..lol...
Clare I'll go look at the article thanks...:-)
Jody, truly, I would stay away from ebay when it comes to buying plumerias. Florida Colors Nursery has very reasonable prices, and you can be assured that you will get what you pay for with them. You cannot be assured of that when you buy from eBay. Here is their web site: http://www.floridacolors.com/ You can buy a fully rooted 'Intense Rainbow' for $25.
With plumerias, they can bloom when newly rooted or grafted so age does not make a difference. Given the right conditions, they should bloom for you in the first year that you have them. The more tips a plumeria has, the more chances for a bloomhead on each one and also the more money you can expect to pay for it. The more tips a plumeria has, the more valuable it is.
Fragrance varies sharply, depending on the cultivar, from strong and desirable to mild and barely detectable. 'Intense Rainbow' has a mild sour peach fragrance to my nose. It's not one of the better smelling flowers in my opinion. Here's the thread on fragrance from the FAQ's sticky thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/687548/
My article on plumerias hasn't been posted yet, but perhaps it will be on Monday:-)
Hi Clare...thanks for all the great info..I have another question..how long does it take fo them to bloom from seed? Thanks again for all your help..maybe I'll buy something very fragrant..weither I like the color or not...:-)
Jody, you would probably love 'Kauka Wilder.' It has the same colors as 'Intense Rainbow' but in different intensities. The fragrance is out of this world. It is a must-have for every collector.
It takes an average of 2-3 years to bloom from seed if you are lucky. I think 4-5 years is more accurate. I sowed 40 seeds in December 2004. Three bloomed at around two years old. Ten more bloomed at around three years old. So that leaves 27 more that have not bloomed yet for me and may be waiting until they are nearly four years old or even five years old to bloom, and I am in an ideal climate where they stay outside all year. It could take longer in a climate where they have to be stored in a cool garage or basement during the winter. For the fastest results, it is best to keep them growing with heat and lights during the winter in a greenhouse or house. In the meantime, it is helpful to have established plants going at the same time so you can enjoy some flowers while you are waiting for the seedlings to bloom.
Hi Clare...I like that one..I think I'll have to order something that is going to bloom this year..I can wait for the others but I need at least one for instant gratification..lol..Thanks,I'll go look it up...:-)
I know exactly what you mean. If you call Luc or Carol at Florida Colors when they get back from Thailand in a few weeks, you can tell them that you want to buy one with an inflo that smells great, and they will take care of you. You can describe the colors that you want too and let them pic for you. I think you won't be disappointed. Or you can tell them that you want to buy a Kauka Wilder graft and ask if they have one with an inflo.
Thanks..I'll have to wait until next month..no exra money this month I bought too many seeds...lol...
Thanks Clare...I'll have to wait until next month..no extra money this month...I bought too many seedsanda few plants...lol...Oh it look like it's only $20 for 'Kauka Wilder' as a graft...:-) I'll call them when I get a few extra bucks..I feel the need for instant gratification...heehee Thanks for helping me out..I've looked at everything they are offering and 'Kauka Wilder' seemd to fit the bill for what I want very fragrant...:-) Thanks again for all your help..now I'm heading to the fragrant sticky thread from above.... :-)
My pleasure:-) My 'Kauka Wilder' has a inflo on it, and I'm really excited about that.
