waterproof sealer/paint?

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I bought a glazed ceramic pot last year and made it into a small water garden. It's glazed on the inside and outside, but whoever glazed it missed spots. The water seeps through the spots and leaks onto my concrete patio. It's a problem because I don't want this area to always be wet, and our water source is so salty that when it seeps the salt leaves deposits everywhere on the outside of the pot. Is there any (fish safe) sealer/paint that I can get to waterproof it better? Should I do it on the inside or outside (or both)? It needs to be fish safe because I put the baby goldfish from my big pond in it.

Thanks!

I have the same problem with two small ceramic pots that I bought recently! I hope someone jumps in here on this thread to give us some suggestions to resolve our dilemma.

not sure but you should be able to reglaze and refire the pots. I have done that a lot of time with any pots I make that have an area that glaze didn't take.

That wouldn't be an option for me.....this thing is as big as a bath tub. I'm really looking for some sort of sealant that I can paint on, but thanks for the idea!

What about using the clear aquarium sealant that is used for fish tanks? If appearance is a concern for you just use it on the inside of the pot. It should adhere pretty well if you make sure the pot is clean and dry before you put it on. I have used it to seal around the drainage holes in glazed pots that I have converted to hold water. I plug the drain holes with a round cork and use the aquarium sealant around that and have not had a problem. You might also consider using the stuff they make to join the plastic liners for decorative outdoor ponds. The kind I have seen looks like a flat ribbon of grey caulk. You could tear off a small piece and kind of squish it down on the inside to cover the leaky spots. Have not tried that so I do not know how well it would work.

I might try the aquarium sealant...too many leaky spots for the tape.

I do know there are roofing sealants that are painted on as a single full coat for waterproofing and some are used by ponders but I don't know the brand or supplier, sorry :(

I would be afraid that roofing sealants might have something plants don't like... but I could be wrong.

Yeah, there's one specifically that is safe, but I lost the link to the maker. You really shouldn't just go out and buy any.......a search would probably find it, I'm just too busy to find it right now.

I was told by some experienced ponders to plug the holes with plumbers putty and then paint the inside with "Lock-Tite". I'm not sure how to spell it but its that basement sealer stuff you can buy at Lowes.
