Spring Bulbs

Jamestown, TN(Zone 6a)

We are digging a utility ditch to our new home site. I would love to put in some bulbs as we are back-filling. Does anyone have daffodil or narcissus bulbs left? Will they live if planted now on the Cumberland Plateau in middle, north TN? Any other ideas for a long (1500') driveway?

Hi, annie--

Sorry, no bulbs left here.

It does seem awfully late to plant narcissus but I guess if you find some bulbs in good condition you could try it....

Around our area Christmas time is pretty much the latest to plant daffodils.

You may be too late for narcissus this year, but a classic combination for along a driveway such as yours is daylilies combined with narcissus for a spring bloom (narcissus) followed by a high summer bloom show (the hemerocallis). You can find good prices on landscape daylilies if you check around on the Internet or there are lots of daylily farms in Tennessee and the southeast who will sell odd lots for not much $$.

Here's an example of what I'm trying to describe, although I wouldn't pay the WFF prices!

Good luck. t.

Thank you Tabasco,
I found quite a few bulbs yesterday at a local farmer's co-op. I'm going to try them. They are firm and look fine. Yes, indeed, mixing in daylillies will be grand. There are some growers in the immediate area.
Waiting for spring,
