This may be a fool's errand, but I'm going to give it a try if I can just find some squash to buy. lol lol
Judy
Judy, I have tried a few times to grow the Cayote and have had no luck at all. But I'm going to try again this summer. I usually buy mine at a Walmart Super Center or at the larger grocery stores. If you figure it out before I do let me know what you did. I'm going to try a different location and soil this year.

Hi Judy,
I'll check the local Walmart, which carries them when they are in season. But I doubt if any are available at the moment. They are usually harvested in the summer and fall. If you want, I can d-mail when you whenever I do see them, and we can arrange to get a couple up your way. They usually sell for 4 for a dollar when they are in season, so the shipping would be the bigger cost.

Mark,
Thank you so much for your kind offer, my Wal-Mart may have them when they are in season. I'll check and get back with you if they don't. I hesitate using the ones that are available now, afraid it would be picked before it
was ripe but might go ahead in hopes of getting a harvest in the fall.
I bought one a couple of days ago at my Wal-Mart, cooked it with a tad of butter, sweet onion, salt and pepper. In my opinion it tasted better than yellow straight neck but the texture was firmer which I liked because it allowed for a slight carmelization of the onion. Yellow squash would have been mush.
I also posted the original request on the Vegetable Garden Forum and it has some interesting postings. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/694972/
Ya'll have a good day!!
Judy
I just bought some this morning. Now, just have to get them to grow. lol. Has anyone here ever grown these?
Robin,
A poster on the other thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/694972/ said it was a easy grade school project as easy as growing sweet 'tater. You might want to to there and contact the poster.
Judy
Thanks Judy, I'll go check it out now.
