Ruined Plumerias

Southern, CA(Zone 8b)

I think some of my plumeria, got ruined with the cold frost, they are very soft and mushy along the stem.
Anyone know? Are they dead?

Same here sowmo. I was thinking of cutting the mush off.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Im sad to report that mush is dead.
Cut back to clean wood with a sterilized pair of snippers or knife.
Use alcohol to wipe between cuts.
If you leave the mush on the plant it can turn pathogenic and rot the whole plant if theres any still alive.
If the roots are undamaged and you still have healthy branches then many new tips will follow.
Thats the only 'advantage' to tip damage.
Im so sorry for your losses.
Its cold up here so they all come inside.
All 300+ of them........... sheeeesh

So sorry about your losses, you guys! Definitely, cut off the mush as Michael said. Cut down to clean white wood. I have a few damaged tips myself. Sorry, guys:-(

Sowmo, these plumerias are only hardy to Zone 10, and even then, they can sustain damage with a rare cold blast like we had. In your Zone of 8b, you need to grow them in containers and bring them in before your first frost date. In some rare circumstances, they can survive in Zone 9b, but there is no way that they can survive an 8b winter.

Michael, it is nice to see you back here! I hope you are well:-)

Southern, CA(Zone 8b)

Thank you Claire and Michael. I will trim them down.

Hi Weegy, good luck with your plumies.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

I'm cutting mine back today. Good luck with yours sowmo. Our frost was predicted...we never have frost...and I could kick myself for not bringing this one in. It was under the eaves and I thought protected...WRONG!
Clare this is the one that you helped me nurse back too.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Ok, just cut mine back about 3 feet and wanted to cry. Should I seal those cuts with anything?
The remaining branches are hard and healthy looking.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Spray with a fungicide, they may need it.
let me dry out naturally after that
Protect from further frost though if you can.

Oh, you can be sure I'll be watching the weather reports for sure!

Southern, CA(Zone 8b)

We learned the hard way. 'lol, If any of mine survive, from now on, I will keep them in the garage during dormancy.

Same here, sowmo and weegy. :-(
If we see each other at the roundup, we can take turns kicking each other.
I can remember a really damaged bougainvillea around Easter when we lived in La Costa, weegy, so you bet I'm watching the weather reports, too.

That is so weird! Luc only seemed worried about me and where I live during the cold snap. I talked to him and everything seemed okay where he is. I guess he kept an eye out and turned on the sprinklers. I do know he has an electronic thermometer outside his front window that sets off an alarm when freezing temps are near, so that probably saved him.

I am in a microclimate here between two "lakes" of the St, Johns River and also having more spring-fed lakes nearby. There are guava and akee fruit trees in my neighborhood that not only have their leaves still, but also young fruits! Yet--nearby towns have apparant frost damage I have seen. I feel very fortunate indeed as we only had one morening when I saw a little frost on the ground.

Michael, I was starting to think you fell off the planet! Good to hear from you again.

We have had a number of nights in the thirties this month and it went down to 34.5 last Friday but that has been the lowest. Last night the low was 57. Is that weird weather or what? Ya'll better move north. LOL

I shouldn't tempt fate by gloating, one of these day we are going to get walloped.
