We were given this as a Carludovica....can any of you Mavens confirm it? or know the correct name? Palm Bob???????
Carludovica?
Yes I had grown this but lost it several years ago. I have the full name in my data base I will have to look it up. It is Cyclanthus Carludovica. If you do get seeds or small starts I would be interested in replacing my lost plant. I could do a trade I have one with fan leaves that is a climber. It looks like a philodendron and palm tree were crossed. They are just seedlings very very small but should have them looking fairly good in late spring or summer.
I have a small one and love it. Yes it is the Panama Hat Plant! Nice One!

I am not sure that it is a Panama Hat-for one thing, the leaves should be more of a circle at that size, and also, I have never seen a single at that size either-usually they are clumping at an early age. It may be a relative of a Panama Hat though.
I agree with tigerlily....possibly Cyclanthus bipartitus?
Brian....Cyclanthus and Carludovica are two seperate genus in the Cyclanthaceae family, aren't they?
If you're looking for a Carludovica palmata, Brian....Chris Durham usually has them available for sale.

I don't think its a cyclanthus bipartitus either. I think it may be some sort of orchid-but thats just a guess
Definately doesn't look like any Orchid I've ever seen!
there are some orchids that grow in hawaii that are different than what we are used to here on the mainland. I am not saying that it is a orchid-just a guess, it could be in the grass family
Oh tigerlily: I hope I didn't sound like I knew what I was talking about. LOL. I don't know much about many plants at all. Her photo just looked so much like a little one I have that I thought it was one of those Panama Hat Plants. And, I don't have a clue about orchids either, even though I have a few that I try to keep alive. I sure hope someone can give her a correct ID ... I am really curious. It's a really neat looking plant. Oh wow, if it is an Orchid, I would love to see the flower.

Cyclanthaceae is the family name for this group of plants Carludovica is the group its in but not sure off hand what species. These are south american plants once believed to be in the palm tree family later due the flower structure were put in the aroid family. Then after DNA testing and other research they were put into their own group and later said they were more closely releated to Pandanas like the cork screw pine. Many of these have very odd flowers much like a spath with very stringy looking pollen. The leaves are stiff and much like a palm tree. I have take photos of about a hundered different species.
Here is a pic of the flower of this exact same species that is pictured above.
Wow!
Cool flower picture, Brian!!
