Transferering photos from a pc with virus

There is a virus in the old pc, and I woud like to put all of my photos to the new pc.
Is there a risk that I can transfer virus by doing this?
I was told I could put the photos on a cd, but should scan it for virus before transfering them.
Is this the best way?
Any suggestions are very welcomed
