Look at these talons...

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Saw another hawk today and just couldn't resist trying to get a shot of him, The branch he is on doesn't seem like it would support his weight, But it did. His feet and talons look so big, Does anyone know what kind of hawk this is??

Red-tailed Hawk. For all its size, there's not a huge lot of weight there, most of it is fluffy feathers. If you could get a Mallard duck to perch there (not that one would!!), the branch would bend more.

Resin, Thanks for the info! I keep thinking that a red-tailed hawks tail should be red and this ones doesn't really look red to me, There are not that many variety of hawks in my area and yet I still can't tell the differences in them ( But, I'll learn)
pelletory, Thanks!

Hi Iris,

It's only adults that have the red tail. Young ones (up to about a year to 15 months old) have brown tails.
