Annuals for shade

Ottawa, ON(Zone 4a)

I've got impatiens and wax begonias for long-lasting colour, but can anyone recommend annuals that I can sow directly in the garden to supplement my perennials?

Click on my name and check out my list, Janet R. The only thing that didn't do well is the Shirley Poppy. It bloomed but grew on its side, mostly, poor thing, looking for the sun. LOL. I have sun about 3 hours midday on one bed (Front bed) and barely dappled sun on the Woods bed. Anyway my list identifies which plants grow in which bed. I am half way through my Journal, so if anything really interests you, e-mail me and I can describe it to you. I have a hard-copy that is complete of all my flowers.

Runew, I didn't know where in your list to check. I went to your journal, but didn't see any specification about beds. Where am I supposed to look?

Well, forget about that. Try Torenia. Very good in shade. Browallia is also good, unless it's real deep shade. I've never tried Mimulus, but have seen it mentioned for full shade.

Thanks Runew.

I have good luck with violas. Sometimes they reseed. I also use caladiums and plant the bulbs directly into the garden. 2 sun lovers I use in the shade are feverfew and talinum. They don't bloom in the shade, but I like the contrast of their yellow-green foliage.
