Cherries grow fine, but I've never eaten the birds to the fruit!
I know all the others are grown here, too, but don't have any.

But I do have some thornless blackberry! ;)

You should try growing blueberry bushes, they're very rewarding!

Check out your local extension office. I bet they have tons of material on this.

Actually, they have a good web site too.

Fruits and nuts are under speciality crops.

My house in Florida had a hickory nut tree next to it and my house in virginia had a pecan tree next to it. From my experience, you probably do NOT want any nut trees near your house. Half eaten nuts and shells thrown to the ground by squirrels will tear your feet up if you like to go barefoot and your lawn mower blade up not to mention throw projectiles everywhere if you are not mowing with a bag.

I've had no experience with Pears or Apples, but squirrels will inspect every peach you have before they ripen by taking one bite out of it and going on to the next. As to cherries, Tropicanna is right, you will be having a knockdown drag out with the birds and when what's left is ripe and over ripe, you will attract every bee an ant in the county, but they do have nets that you can throw over fruit trees to keep birds out of them.

I'm in a rental but I have a huge pecan and a black walnut tree in the back yard. They both produced really well. My neighbor said that last year she got buckets and buckets from the pecan tree. We were shelling them this Christmas. They were delicious!!!

Maybe Moretz has a dog; my pup has been a godsend for keeping the squirrels and deer away. Why, of why didn't I get a new dog years ago???????
