too much light, too little light.....

I've started on some of my spring repotting. Checked some Achimenes pots to see if there are rhizomes, gave them a bit of new soil. Pulled a few SInningias that are resprouting and gave them new soil and a pot up (and a couple of slow release pellets in the bottom). Just noticed two Nematanthus wettsenii (guppy plant) - one getting more light that the other. Here you can see a couple of stems with bigger leaves, compact growth... and one stem in the middle that has tiny leaves that are waaaaaaay spaced out. Can you guess which was getting more light?

I'm no expert but the one with more leaves and compact growth received more light.

I think so too.Whats the answer Ki?

I'm guessing the more spaced out is getting more light simply because that is what happened to mine.

nanna is right :-)
Another example of how too much and too little of something can cause similar symptoms.

I have a lot of things that got too much light last year. I set up some shelves intending to start cactus seeds, but ended up sticking the overflow gesneriads in there instead (didn't get to the cactus seeds).

DH, got me a guppy plant/goldfish plant for valentines. I have it in an east facing window that looks out onto a covered porch. It MIGHT get some very early morning sun in the winter but come summer when the trees leaf out it won't. Would this be too much light for the plant? I could treat it more like a sanseveria and get it away from windows altogether if needed. Advise?

I do learn something new everyday:)
How much light(hours) do you give your gesneriad plants Ki?

Lana, that should be enough light now, and possibly too little in the summer, depending on how leafy the trees are.

The # of hours of lights isn't so much the issue - the shelves are tightly spaced so the leaves were about 4-6 inches from 4 tubes of T8 lights. If the shelves were spaced further apart (which is my "usual" setup) they would have been fine..... Some of the orchids are loving the light levels ;-)

I'll just keep an eye on it and see how it does. Thanks.
