These become trees in zone 9

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

this is the first orange one I have seen down here.....I think they are hardy to zone 8 .....I got so excited that I bought 5 from a little bitty nursery on the coast. We call them Esperanzas but I think it is a Tecoma Stans???

WOW..is that ever a pretty flower!! Congrats on a good find

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I didn't even know that they came in orange......shopping for plants is fun, but good time consuming....you just never know what you are going to find in these out of the way places!!! I told them about my pink Jatropha and that I was having trouble with hard wood cuttings...He asked me to bring him some, he would start propagating them as he had never heard of one that color........then he would give me several back free. What a deal for me!!!!

good job!!! Jatrophas don't do well for me cause they have to be indoors 9 months of the year, wonder if the esperanza would like it cause I have seen seeds for them.....somewhere...

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I can't image without a greenhouse that you could grow esperanza........usually you see the 'Gold ?'
But, on the other hand, i lived in zone 6 for 11 years and could grow things I wouldn't dare to try down here....my favorite plant in zone 6 was a poppy put out by thompson and Morgan called "Pastel Meadows"....I started them indoor under gro lights ....they had to be the prettiest flowers and airy looking in the garden.

North Augusta, ON

lol...what a coincidence...I have a Thompson and Morgan catalogue right here in front of me.
I gave it to Mom to go through and she gave it back to me with 189.00 worth of seeds marked off she wants!!! Can you imagine??
Gonna see if those poppies are in there still.......

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

They are!!! I ordered them to send to people in lower zones....Let me look and see if I have given them all away.....they are tooooooooooo pretty. Then i saw them in someone else's catalog for the first time....can't remember as it is too early in the am to think right now....get back to you

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

threegardeners--the Tecoma is a little hardier than the Jatropha but only by about 1 zone, so it might get a couple more months outside, but if you have cold weather that much of the year then it's going to have to be indoors quite a lot too.

North Augusta, ON

That's what I was afraid of....and I suppose a sunny winter window won't be good enough to keep him happy either....

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Your plant reminds me of campsis radicans - practically a weed here but a gorgeous sight when in bloom. The common name here is trumpet vine, cow vine, hummingbird vine, etc. I think they have a yellow blooming campsis as well. Not as aggressive as wisteria or kudzu but not for the meek at heart. The trunk can get as big around as a man's arm if allowed to grow (Biltmore Estate had several trained on pergolas) that must have been decades old to reach such grand proportions.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Campsis is in the same family as Tecoma, that's probably why it looks so similar. Fortunately Tecoma's not nearly as aggressive!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Last summer I bought two of the trumpet vine....not the new Madam Galen or whatever it is......I am going to plant them on two telephone poles that are not being used.....hoping it makes the hummers happy.....maybe butterflies, too!!

Victoria BC, Canada(Zone 9a)

I have both the yellow and the orange one. They really are so pretty. Last year was my first year for them and I had lots of caterpillars on them. Any idea what kind of butterfly uses it as a host plant? The caterpillars were a solid yellow color.

Oh my goodness, you live in a wonderful place of beauty in the world....You can find out anything about butterflys from TexasPuddyPrint from Edinburg, Texas....she is always on the hummer and butterfly forum and also on the Texas forum....that is all she does!!!!!

Victoria BC, Canada(Zone 9a)

Thanks bettygail heading there now.
We are pretty spoiled here with a mild climate and can grow a lot more than most of Canada. The problem is noone seems to think that and it is often difficult to find a lot of neat plants.

all you have to do is ask.......make a want list for me......also, do you grow from seed......????
If you want an orange one, just ask.....

(Zone 1)

Lovely Plant Gail! How big does it get?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

They start out as small shrubs but bloom beautifully from the beginning.......you can prune back as hard as you want as they are deciduous here. My aunt has two down the road which are over 15 ft. high, but that has taken many years to get that way......On the other hand, my brother grows them and cuts back hard every year as he wants them for background big shrubs in a very large flower bed......I only paid 6.00 for each gallon of these...good price at that little Johnson's nursery in Ingleside.....The large nurseries in CC charge a lot more for a smaller plant....
If you really don't have freezes, Lin, it probably won't even lose its' leaves in the winter....

Gail: Can you check out this link and tell me if this is the same plant? This link shows it with yellow flowers.

You got it!!! same plant different color.....I talked to a member in Arizona and she says both colors grow everywhere there. I am just now seeing the orange one here, but we have lots of the yellow. There is a new yellow cultivar out here, also. It has more blooms but they are not as large as the original tecoma stans....any of them bloom a full 10 months out of the year.....don't know why you couldn't grow them like we do....be happy to send you the orange ones...i can easily buy yellow, but so can you in florida I would think.....look around and let me know.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I forget about the hort sites out of A&M...one of the best agricultural schools in the US....I even cut them in the summer and put them in vases just for the color in the house!!!

(Zone 1)

Oh yeah, I want one! I've been googling and every site shows the yellow!

You've got d-mail!

(Zone 1)

Wow, I bet they make beautiful cut flowers too ... never thought about that. I was just thinking how pretty it would be in the yard. Do you know if they are easy to propagate? I read on one of the websites I found that they can be grown as container plants too! Really pretty plant .... I am going to check into finding a yellow one as well as the orange! I've never seen them in garden centers here, but it says it would grow in my zone, so I don't know why they wouldn't be available. Maybe they just aren't popular here for some reason. What I read says that butterflies and hummingbirds love this plant!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

heavens, I have a yellow small 6" without the leaves, but it is fine....i just left it outside over the winter...let me put it on the heating mat tonight and turn the lights on it tomorrow!!! They didn't have a pic of the plant I am propagating....
Oh, I just saw that I have a dmail...

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

This nursery sells the orange one. I have ordered plants from them and have been very satisfied with their plants.
