Black and White Tiger Moth (Spilosoma glatignyi)
Does the leaf itself sting (bottom spines) when touched, leave alone that caterpillar?
Yes, there are stinging hairs all over the leaves and the stems and they sting anywhere they touch you.
These are native Australian nettles, but are close cousins of Stinging Nettles in England, and the same cure works for them. If you get stung, you find the leavesof a Dock, a Rumex species and crush the leaves over the stings and this considerably relieves the itching from the stings.
The caterpillar my also have at least irritating hairs, but I managed to avoid handling them so I never found out for sure.
