new to brugs - question re: spring emergence

Victorville, CA(Zone 8a)

Hi! I just got my first brugs last spring. They were pink and I got them at Home Depot. They bloomed beautifully all summer. They kind of look like dead brown sticks now:(. I understand in zone 8 they should come back from the root ball. Do I need to remove the dead trunk from last year? How do they come back up...do they send up suckers? Thanks:) Roseana

Roseana, they should be able to shoot suckers from the rootball in your zone, especially if you have a mild winter. It will probably be a good idea to remove the dead trunks and maybe also to cover the area around the rootball like you would do with roses with straw or mulch. That will keep the roots warm during the winter.

Thanks Tonny:) No sign of any suckers yet, but I'll be sure to remove the trunk.

Roseana, I hope that terrible cold snap a month (or so) ago did not kill the roots. I know a lot of people lost plants that were otherwise good in their zone. I can't leave brugs out even mulched real good. They just don't make it. I'm in Z7b. All mine come inside at first frost warning. Good luck! Bj

Hi Bj. I was wondering about the cold we've had here this winter. It seems like its been SO much colder than usual. I'll be really sad if I lose them:(

It would be sad to lose them. I'm not sure I'd leave them out all winter even in your zone.
Our normal winter temps are around the low 30s. This year we had nearly a full month of low 20s. One day it got to 14°, way too cold for my bones! I'm sure that I have lost many plants that normally make it through our "normal" winters. Not much has broke dormancy here yet, so it is hard to tell just what I have lost other than the stuff turning to mush! Bj

I know what you mean, there were a few 11 deg. mornings here. I mostly grow irises and daylilies, it appears they made it through ok. It really didn't dawn on me that the colder winter might mean I would lose them all together. Rats!
