Speaking of Chocolate

Santa Rosa, CA

Eclipse's beautiful Old Medley (Hybridized by Tom Miller wasn't it Carlos) reminded me of one of my favorite browns. If you've seen this recently sorry about that. This one has two names. It was originally called Jim Barry but somebody else thinking in a commercial way I suppose changed the name to Chocolate High. I have to admit I like Chocolate High better but I don't like to have confusion in naming varieties. Anyway, here it is. By the way, there are folks out there who only collect brown hibiscus. To each his own!

Hi David:
Glad to see you here. There are many happy members in this forum with the plants you sell to them.
Old Medley was hybridized by Joe Ludick. Tom, as brown collector, uses it a lot in his breeding program. The name is a combination of its parents, Old Spot and Cynthia Medley.
On the other side, Jim Berry (not Barry) is the official name of the plant you're refering to. Curt changed its name as it didn't sell well. Using the name Chocolate High the situation turned into better sellings.
I had both plants and I lost both last year. I spent the last 8 months in Spain and the plants had to live on their own during that period.

Attached is the belgian version of Chocolate High.

Regards

Carlos

Hey Carlos

Yeah, I knew Curt changed the name thought I would protect the identity as you know it's a "hot" topic to change names. Nice to see you around here as well. They need your data base as you can see I'm not the best at naming. Hope things are working out in Europe.

By the way, your European version looks just like mine as well. It's one of my favorites because of the shape of the plant and how often it blooms. It's a mini but that's ok as long as they produce flowers.

Here's my Jim Berry...
I believe this one may have found it's way here from Curt's.
So, now it's name is Chocolate High?
I'll change my tags...

Love these shades, have to love Brown since it's my last name LOL.
I just did a quick scan of my poor frost burnt garden and discovered that I missed pulling in my pot of Antique Treasure and it is...uh hum, ...toast. I loved that one. :-(
Will have to try to get another and also look for this gorgeous confection Chocolate High!

Your flowers are all so beautiful. I had no idea there were so many different colors or kinds. I just have a couple of normal kinds. I'm learning, are these the hardy kind or the tropical?

ohhh, Robin, these are the big luscious tropicals, and that's why I'm upset I lost that one, my fault though.

I can't blame you there. I would have been so sick. It's one of the most gorgeous flowers I've ever seen. Who do you buy them from? Do you buy the plants or the seeds?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I have purchased plants from various venders over the years, that one was a liner from a couple of years back. Others I have found at local nurseries, and a few from the original poster when I went to the SF garden show. I will soon go to his nursery with friends for more drooling and picture taking. :-)

Thanks Sue, good luck at the show.
