I know, garlic should be planted in the fall, but did anyone ever try to plant garlic in the spring.Zone 8
I would like to try, and are greatful for any suggestions.
Garlic
I think that if you plant it now you have a good chance, although Fall would be better.
I grow Elephant garlic, and last year I did an experiment and planted a second crop in late June.
Well, it came up right away, but it also rotted in the soil right away, too hot.
Here is a thread about growing garlic, I hope it helps. http://davesgarden.com/journal/d/t/frostweed/4151/
Josephine.
Josephine, do you remember the garlic you gave me at the first RU we had? I planted it, but I didn't get it dug up. I thought it rotted, but it didn't. I was so shocked to see it come up again a couple of months ago. It looks like it even multiplied.! Should I wait till fall to harvest?
Mary Lee, I am glad the garlic did well for you and multiplied, normally you would harvest it in June or July depending on when it matures, and then replant in the Fall.
Oh, that's right. I forgot. I'll try to do it right this year.:)
Josephine, thank you for the link regarding garlic. Wow,your garlic looks great!
I have never grown garlic and was hoping to grow some this year, I only recently realized I should have planted last fall. :( Oh well, I'll have plenty of time to be sure the bed is well prepared by the time fall rolls around again. Seed Savers offers a sampler of different varieties I think I will try.
Dawn, I can give you some bulbs at the Fall R.U. and you can have this kind too, it is great.
Josephine.
Thanks Josephine for the Hyperlnk about Garlic.
I am going to plant just a few cloves this spring, just to see, how they come out.
You are welcome Flyingsranch, I hope it works out, and if not,you can always try again in the Fall.
Josephine, thank you for the offer, I would love some garlic bulbs. Ü
stupid deer keep eating off the tops of my garlic that Josephine gave me....
Oh, I am sorry Nada, I didn't know they like garlic, maybe you can put it in a more protected place next time.
*giggle it is in the herb garden up next to the house! I can't think of a more protected place! It is the axis deer (the white tail leave it alone) and they eat anything and are a lot more fearless. It isn't fair... I plant native plants and they import African deer and let them loose!
They import deer and let them loose? I didn't know. Why would they do that?
They import the deer for hunters to be able to shoot something different... They don't let them loose intentionally but so many axis deer have gotten lose in central texas and formed herds that it is just about a plague.
Wow! that is a shame, aren't the native deer good enough? I guess I don't understand killing animals as a form of entertainment, although sometimes it may be a necessary measure to reduce their numbers.
I don't have a problem with people killing deer for eating or culling but IMPORTING something that isn't native and not keeping it locked up should be a crime. Axsis can have babies anytime of the year and they will eat things that white tail deer will not touch unless they are starving. So native plants and flowers that usually can survive from year to year have a much harder time when the axsis move in.
Well, I hope someone does something about it, although I don't know what.
me either... they don't allow killing deer in my subdivision and the axis deer seem to keep around here... I just keep hoping they will wander off a little and a hunter will find them....
Interesting! kind of neat looking deer but can't see why they had to import them when we have so many already that are a nuisance in suburbs.
So, went to look it up. http://www.nsrl.ttu.edu/tmot1/cervaxis.htm says they first imported them in 1932.
The axis deer are not regulated by Texas game laws. The landowners that were looking for a means of generating revenue year around now import axis deer so they can sell hunts for a non regulated species. We have had some rogue elk here. They made an escape from a local game farm. They wiped out gardens on a major scale. They could have and would have been harvested but it was entirely too hot to process that much meat very quickly.
Here in Gillespie Co, DH grabs every chance he get to harvest axis deer and give the white tails a break. You're right, they shouldn't be here, but the meat sure is good. The flavor is much better than white tail deer, and that's saying a lot. The meat he brings home makes a huge difference in our food bill. I buy beef once or twice a year.
He can kill a few more for me silverfluter! *giggle I would love to have the meat.
Well, if we can ever manage to meet at Af V. nursery, I can share a link of sausage with you.:) Right now DD is sick and I'm missing work, so it may be awhile before I have any money to spend at a nursery. I don't dare go there without money.:)
I know the feeling. I spun a rod bearing in my toyota 4runner so I'm gonna be poor for a LONG time...
Oh dear! I don't know what exactly that is, but it sounds very expensive. Where did you take it for repairs?
I found a shop in Dallas that will rebuild the engine and put new stuff on it for 1500.00 BUT... I haven't found a cheap and easy way to get it to Dallas yet.
I know a shop in New Braunfels that does excellent work, but I'm not sure they can do that particular job. It would sure be a cheaper trip though if they could do it.
Actually $1500 isn't bad if that includes R/R (remove and replace) in the vehicle. That usually adds $500 - 800 to the job. Properly done in will have all new hoses, belts, filters, etc.
When I was racing (64-68) San Antonio Speed Shop did great work and inexpensive, but you had to take the offending parts in (engine, transmission, 3rd-member, etc.)
I used to spin rod bearings on a regular basis (Datsun Fairlady), and have to have the crankshaft trued. For about 3x the usual fee, they FIXED the problem - ground the crank down and built it back up with hardened metal before truing. Never had another problem
thanks... I found someone local that will put in a new engine (1600) for about 500. Still checking out refrences though.
Ok, I hope it works out.:)
yep.. he's working on it right now...
Great. So you'll have no trouble getting to the RU?
shouldn't... and with the 4runner I will have loads of room! *giggle
OK. I want to plant some garlic frostweed. I see elephant garlic in the grocery store. What I need to know it whether you peel the skin before planting the cloves or does it matter? I've had garlic sprout on the counter waiting to be used so I know I can grow it. :)
No you don't need to peel it, but you do separate the cloves. Good luck I hope it works great for you.
Josephine.
Thanks Josephine! Me too. I knew to separate it from reading the thread but wasn't sure if the skin stayed on.
Connie
