Rose Brested Grosbeak

New Matamoras, OH(Zone 6a)

Hello folks;,

Nice to find a bird forum here......I'm enjoying reading all the different threads with so many different birds so I thoght I'd share one of mine with everyone...

This is a portrait of one of the RoseBrested Grosbeaks that show up at my place during the spring and spend the summer..... They eat alot of berries and seem to like the sunflower seeds in the feeders...

How wonderful! I have never seen one of those and I sure hope I do. What a perfect flawless photo - thanks so much for sharing it with us! I'm hoping you have lots of others to show too. :-)

Great picture! One of may favorites at the feeder. We get them in the spring-fall. I like seeing the juvies as their color is so mixed. They look like they are wearing tuxes to go out to eat!

Marlton, NJ

Outstanding photo Dave!!! I would love to see one of these. Welcome to the forum!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Welcome to DG, it's addictive ! How lucky of you to see one of those and get a good picture. I've seen one, which is rare for my area. At that time I didn't have a digital so the picture I got looked like a dot in the grass..(lol). Any more pics to share ?

Anchorage, AK(Zone 4a)

Very nice shot Dave. As a child growing up in MI, the Rose Breasted Grosbeak was my favorite bird. Unfortunately, there aren't any here in Alaska.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

It is hard to have a favorite I think. When you look at the bright red cardinals right now, then the small chick a dee dee dee... the nuthatch, the bright orange oriole tapping on the window for an orange, or a cedar waxwing with a berry in its mouth. How about a humming bird hovering to look at you when you wear bright clothing or stopping to look at that drink you have on the deck. Then there are the eagles, hawks and water birds. You must miss alot of those, but you have moose and other wildlife that I envy.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Dave, outstanding photo - hope you have more to share!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Dave, I use to have a couple pairs that stayed around all summer where I use to live ( I have moved within the last few months) and they were so neat to watch and so pretty!! Thank's for posting the photo, It was an excellent shot!!

Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

Dave, welcome to Dave's Garden and the Bird Watching Forum. Nice photo of the Rose-breasted Grosbeak. I only see them during migration as they pass-through. Last year it was on May 3rd. I didn't see any during the Fall migration.

Looking forward to more of your photos.

Thanks for such a warm welcome.... It's really nice to have all these forums to learn and share so much information on so many different plants.. And it's REALLY nice having a forum just for the birds....This is fantastic, and so many different species of birds to look at along with alot of good information...I'm really enjoying reading through so many different threads and seeing so many different birds...

When I moved out here there was so much wildlife, I thought it would be nice to try and photograph some of it.....I never thought it would become as addictive as it did..... I'm looking forward to sharing some more of my feathered friends with everyone as well as reading everyone elses posts....For anyone that enjoys hummingbirds I started a thread over on the "Gardening for hummingbirds & Butterflies" forum.....

Thanks again for such a warm welcome from everyone....

What a beautiful bird...both of them. How I'd love to see them.

I got a kick out of your statement - " I thought it would be nice to try and photograph some of it.....I never thought it would become as addictive as it did"

Pine City, MN(Zone 4a)

This is one of the best RBG pics I've ever seen!

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Daves, Thanks for the up-date! I should have known what it was as I always had a couple pairs around at the 'old place'. But for some reason, The picture of yours looked different. ( I better put my glasses back on!)

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Best RBG pic I have seen. I have only seen one of these, last year at my feeder. No picture.

Thanks.

Hello everyone',,,

With this latest snow storm we had this past Tuesday night I'm still trying to get finished digging out, so haven't had much time to do much else...... That was a real doozie we had......Don't need another one of those this winter, thats for sure......

I knew I had more pictures of the Grosbeaks and sure enough after looking through a bunch of folders I finely found them...... Heres a couple more....

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

UncleG, your pics are some of the clearest that I have seen. What type of camera are you using?

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

You aren't kidding! I can see every detail! Beautiful pics!

Dave, again - fabulous shot! Are you able to get close, or do you have a telephoto lens? I have a 300mm lens with my Sony SLR, but I don't think I've ever had such clear photos.

New Matamoras, OH(Zone 6a)

Murmur;..

As a rule I'm able to get close to the Grosbeaks...... I try and pick a spot where they stage, grab a lawn chair and just sit and wait......

Most of these were taken with a 400mm F5.6 canon lens.... I had a Sony 717 before I switched to the DSLR........ The Sony was great for flowers, but just wasn't cutting it for the wildlife.....

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Hope I won't regret getting my Sony!! I sure considered a Canon, but one of my sons-in-law took me shopping and he is such a Sony fan and had researched for me so I went with his suggestion. And he's such a sweetheart, I would never tell him I had any regrets!

Great pics of the male and female Grosbeaks Dave. We are always thrilled every time they stop over in our yard during migration.

Thanks for sharing Dave!

Oh, I have never seen one in KY! You must feel lucky.

Hebron, KY

Bluegrassmom,

They don't stay long at all when we see them. They stop and eat some black oil sunflower seeds and then they're gone and only during the migration. DH and I are always in awe when we spot them in the yard. I'm usually speechless when I see them (that's the truth, lol).

Where are you in KY? We are part of the greater Cincinnati, OH metro area in KY.

Marilyn;...

Make sure you let us know here if you see them moving through.......I think it would be kind of interesting following their migration......

Thanks;,,

Dave, my favorite bird and your excellent pictures bring back fond memories :) Before moving to Virginia, I had a bird feeder sitting on a rail right outside my dining room window - so I could watch the birds feeding while eating my breakfast, lunch, etc. Every year without fail, either on Mother's Day, or a few days before or after, a Rose Breasted Grosbeak would show up at the feeder and before long, the male and female would bring their babies and feed them as well - the family would all line up for dinner. This continued all summer and by September they were gone - only to return the next spring! It was my favorite Mother's Day present to see them return every year - the year I moved to Virginia, my daughter called to let me know they had returned right on schedule :) Even though there are a few counties in Virginia where they can be found I've yet to see one here and I miss their gorgeous color and wonderful song.

Debbie
