Can anyone recommend an onion than is mild & sweet (as onions go) and do well in storage from SETS rather than seed?
Grew Sweet Spanish Yellow Utah Jumbo last year. Stores well but is a strong tasting onion.
Burpee's " Early and Mild" did very well. Sweet, mild and stored very well.
Still looking for a set variety that would come close!
Live up here in Wintry Western New York. I forget what type of onion does well up here - long or short day type.
Asking too much from Onions???????
You need long day onions, but I don't know of any set types that are mild and sweet. Walla Walla from seed is great.
n2dyt, have you considered bypassing both sets and seeds and using plants? Their cost is extremely reasonable and will give you a great head start over both sets and seeds.
I tend to recommend Dixondale Farms. Check them out at the following link. Even if you decide not to buy from them you can peruse their products and glean great information on quite a few varieties. (I really have an idea you'll see something you like there!)

Horseshoe, that is a very interesting site and very informative. Never bought onions that way. Maybe this year!
Thanks
I have been using Dixondale Farms for years and have never had anything but outstanding results from their plants. I couldn't recommend them more. And you can get Walla Wallas from them -- which I do every year even though I am not supposedly north enough for long day onions. They grow wonderfully for me anyhow. A sweet and forgiving onion.
I second the accolades, Dixondale Farms is a wonderful source of onions and great customer service.
How well do "Walla-Walla" store?
Onion transplants rock. :) It's the only way I've had good, consistant luck with onions. I've not used Dixondale Farms before, but I think I'll give them a go this year. Thanks for the link!
n2dyt, Walla Walla is not a great longterm storager. If you grow it just grow enough that you think you can eat ina month or so.
Eggs, I think you'll be pleased with Dixondale. They are a first-rate biz with me!
