Some time ago a nursery owner told me that the paperwhite bulbs that were developed and grown in Israel were not good for bedding out. She seemed adamant that they should be used for forcing only. Can anyone explain this?
I purchased a few this past December, They are up now and are looking great. They are very different from the older paperwhites which I dug up at my mother in law's house. The new bulbs have produced much thicker and greener foliage. Dare I hope that they will perennialize and give good repeat bloom in zone 8?
paperwhite question
I have planted out "forcing" paperwhites and they were killed by winter frosts. (They might have been 'Ziva'.)
They emerge from dormancy before the onset of our winter temps here in 7b and eventually peter out if they survive at all.
I threw some out in the yard last year (didn't plant them, just dumped them) and one or two of them survived and rooted, to my surprise. They didn't return this year.
Ah, well. If they make it next year I can be pleasantly surprised.
