I seem to be getting mixed information. Is Scarlet Hibiscus / Texas Star woody deciduous or fleshy herbaceous? I live in Birmingham, AL...apparently newly designated as zone 8a.
Hibiscus coccineus
Hibiscus coccineus is a herbaceous plant that dies back to the ground. It's hardy to at least zone 6. I grow many hardy kinds including the Scarlet. One variety I created is a pink blush flower with red center. Some DG members wanted to try this one and I had some plants to sale last spring. Hibs are neat plants and very pretty for the garden.
Wow that is a beautiful pink.
I think so too marie. The leaves are a fuzzy to the touch(most hibs are smooth leafed), and it grows to about 3 to 4 ft tall. One of its parents is the California hibiscus which is a rare plant in the state. It has pale white flowers with a red center.
