Trimming / filing dog nails - but they are black nails...

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Greetings!

After an incident with a less than reputable dog groomer
a while back, our Yorkie; Doobie is scared to death to have her nails
touched, clipped, filed, etc.

I can't believe it. I just connected the Dremel tool with a sanding
wheel, laid her upside down on her back on my lap (well, most
of her fit, anyhow, LOL) and turned it down sort of low.

At first she was nervous, but when she realized how nice it was,
she actually closed her eyes as though she were receiving a
pedicure. Too cute. As for our other dog, Sophie, she was very
difficult to talk into this procedure.

The question I have is, how far can I file?

I don't want to hurt her, and don't need them short, but they
are definitely too long. As her nails are black, and not see through
at all, is there a way to tell when I should stop? I'm just barely touching
her nail, taking away itty bits at a time, so I'm not holding the sanding
disc on the same nail until it shortens.

Any helpful hints would be very much appreciated.

Karen Marie
