Anyone heard a long range forecast for the coastal areas? Is it ever going to get to normal?
These overnight freezes are "not normal" and are makin' me cranky! I want to plant something!
I started alot of indoor seeds this week, but it's not enough. :) Cabin fever has set in and I want to dig in dirt.
Still a good month or so away from the "last frost". So, I'm curious:
Anybody getting out in the garden yet? If so, what are you doing?
Deb
Wish I could plant somethin'! You?
Would you believe the pick your own strawberry fields have opened around here. It is amazing; they didn't open last year until April 1st. And, they are delicious!!!!!
It is scary though and I too am afraid to plant or feed my hungry plants that never stopped growing this year. Some cold weather is still possible.
Oooh! That means the ones here should open soon. There's one about a mile from me - I'll have to do a drive-by and see. Thanks for the tip. :)
I just moved here last May from Cape Cod so it is really exciting to see what goes on around here each month. I have seen something blooming every month so far. Have fallen in love with the camellias. Still renting and will be looking for a home to buy this summer. It's really unnerving not having a garden yet. I have ordered some wild flowers(solomon seals, jack in the pulpit) and put them in pots for now until one day they will go into my garden. I HAVE to get something for Pete's sake!!! I'm going crazy. I also started some gardenias from cuttings and Southern Magnolia from seeds that fell to the ground. Although I've recently heard now that the Magnolia won't bloom unless it's grafted it to a stem. Hmmmm... Will continue to root cuttings of local bushes. I saw a great huge pomagranit about 50 years old with at least 100 fruits on it last summer. I WANT one....tee.. hee ..hee ..So I will keep getting plants and keep them in pots for now and dream of the day!!!!
Fancyflea: First off,...Welcome to the Carolinas! And, I should really not complain about it not being warm enough yet. I should be happy I have the garden - even if it's a bit brown right now! I hope you find a house with the perfect garden really soon. Sounds like you'll have a pretty good indoor garden meanwhile. :)
When I was a kid, I remember a neighbor had a big pommegranete tree and the birds loved it!
Good luck with the house/garden-hunting and I will try to cultivate patience! ;>
Deb
Welcome Fancyflea, you will love it here. I wouldn't worry about those Magnolias; the birds plant magnolia seeds all the time and the wild ones bloom just fine. Good luck finding that perfect house and garden.
Lol, deb, you need to come stand in my greenhouse for a while. I've got seeds popping up all over the place in there along with some hibiscus seedlings that have been screaming for bigger shoes for the last few weeks. There is so much to do out there that I can't seem to get started cause I don't know where to start first!

It's time for strawberry picking already? My wife usually does that up on St. Helena I think. I'm not going to pick strawberries but I'll tell her. LOL.
Here's a link to the article about the early strawberries in yesterday's paper: http://www.beaufortgazette.com/local_news/story/6364233p-5678331c.html
My neighbor brought me some she had picked and they are beautiful to look at and they taste wonderful but, like the article mentions, they are firm and unusually crisp. DH called them strawberry apples. LOL
