Raising rabbits for meat/Chickens for eggs

Grantsboro, NC(Zone 8b)

What is the best bred of Rabbit for meat and how many should you start with?
Also want a few chickens that lay the big brown eggs-what type are best.

I am gonna be new to this kinda ,but hope by end of year to be ready.
I was raised on a farm between Buchanan and Tallapoosa, Georgia but that has been over 30 years ago. We had rabbits and chickens.Oh yeah goats, cows, mules, pigs.

I am tired of the city life was retiring in Dec. now it will be next Dec. GRRRR

Well there are lots of classic egg laying chickens. I find my sex-link, barred rock and buff orpington lay very well, and don't go broody,. They are good cold weather layers, although I'm not totally sure how cold it gets where you are. I'm not a huge fan of Rhode Island Reds, temperment wise, although lots of other folks here have RIRs they love. My barred rock is a total love. Silver Laced wyandottes lay pretty well, but they are sooo chatty! SO if you get those, be ready for a constant one ended conversation from each hen. :) Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with chickens!

i love rabbit meat, but ive never raised them....the wild ones dont seem to taste that bad, i think they are called eastern cottontails. i agree with backyard hens, i dont have the silver laced wyandottes though. my favorite would probably be my black austrolorps

I googled and came across this ::
New Zealand (Black, Red, or White) The standard meat rabbit 9 - 12 lbs

I thought this was a good link

For chickens I plan on having Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps for the bulk of my egg layers. Added a couple other types in for good measure and just because...lol. But I'm in a cold zone so I tried to go with cold hardy types.

We raise white new zealands and found they are a quiet large breed. My kids like fried rabbit better than chicken! As far as the chickens go, I have raised both Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks both are good egg layers. However, in my experience, the Barred Rocks have a better temperment! Good luck and have fun!

most people raise either new zealand whites Californian rabbits for meat i prefer the cals but raise new zeland because that is what the processor wants as to how many two does and one buck will give 60 or more fryers a year
