Tropical Winter

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

I just got back after leaving my garden for 6 weeks while we were traveling . I was delighted to see that some areas had filled in nicely when i got back. Here's one of the good ones. There were many disasters too and a couple of casualties.

How lovely!!! Really tranquil and lush! Thanks so much for sharing! Hope the casualties aren't major.

Thank's Carol,

Nothing too import was lost but my ' Michelia champaca alba, JOY tree , is on the brink.

A tropical Charley Brown tree ?? I think it will be ok, there are new leaves on all the tips, but not giving me much JOY.

No one looks after your garden like you do ourselves.

Had forgotten there WERE places this lush in the United States.....always think of Costa Rica or Hawaii to see a sight such as this............thanks!!

Here's a Ti "Sherbert" that is getting just the right light to bring out the colors........at last, it's been in the shade all winter and just started getting early morning sun this week as the sun shifted back.

Here's my bitter sweet Vireya 'Glowing Embers' it's first flower .

Sweet because its a perfect orange
Bitter because it should have a big dome of flowers and I only got one.

ooooooh....I could frame these and hang in my home.....share all your beauties with us....

Great place Neil! I'm waiting for my garden to grow into its own so it will look like that. Most of my plants are babies (well, with the exception of a lot of plumeria....)

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Not as photogenic, but equally as exciting for me is the arrival of a new shoot on my Variegated Heliconia , a very expensive e-bay purchase that arrived in poor condition , finally has new growth to show off.

Anyone have experience with this one.

One more,
I mixed a lot of my potted blue/grey philodendrons among the bromiliads in the back while i was gone and they seemed to do just fine.

They are indeed Jeri.
The best screen from neighbors you could ever have. And I know now that they're not even real Palms.

They're BOP? Check out this link: http://itotd.com/articles/242/travelers-palms

Ravenala Madagascariensis. I love these. We have four huge trunks on ours. There were five but Wilma took out one of them...
Love that variegated heliconia - I am a sucker for anything variegated.
Just a question - do you have sealing wax palm?

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

No sealing wax palm, but oh have i fought it. I've come across them a few times at quite a price but knowing that we'll be moving soon I decided to wait and see if they will be ok in zone 10b. Im not used to having to think about zones. There are many palms that thrive down here that just wont make it any further north.

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Here's some others, if you can pick them out, the one to the left is Mamey. The others i'll have to look for the names.

Thank you so much for sharing your pictures. It's getting a little warmer here the last couple of days but it so nice to see something that doesn't look dead.

the color echoes in post #3176938 is simply marvelous.
also I wish my xant. hilo beauty would grow like yours. Mine just doesn't want to get big. I suspect it needs more moisture.

Great pictures! I'm glad most of it made it through. Wondered if you were gone somewhere as we hadn't seen you post for a while.

Neil, thanks for sharing your private rain forest- its truly wonderful! Having a bad case of zone envy as I look out the window at the snow, lol.

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

LOL Zone Envy, the same thing happens to me when i get all the bulb catalogs and when i go to Cape Cod in the summer and see all those perennial gardens, trruly amazing. I know people will laugh at me when I say this but it would be kinda nice to have the winter off from gardening, theres no down time in a tropical garden.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

The grass is always greener on the other side for gardeners. I console myself knowing if I lived that far south I'd miss the peonies, lilacs, and spring bulbs, and at least tropicals do well here, even if they do require extra effort. The challenges do make it fun and rewarding though :)

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

This is a case where the grass may *not* always be greener. Those winters off sometimes involves this: a textbook midwestern blizzard. This photo was taken before it really got started. :) I called it "nontropicalwinter." :P
